I am in the process of tightening up the cylinder head bolts with the help of the Haynes manual on my 200 tdi 2.5 H reg discovery, after the 1st stage of setting to 40 I then have to turn 60 (45degrees) but first attempt snapped the bolt, so what am i doing wrong?

3 notch gasket (18 bolts)

Haynes manual values have been known to be wrong, I would check a workshop manual (google it and you should fine one) I have just looked through the Defender workshop manual in the hope of finding the 200tdi engine in it, but the closest I can find is the 2.25 (which I assume is the same on the 2.5 as there is a shortened list for the 2.5) which says for cylinder head 84.8 - 95.8lbf ft

Thanx Discomania, useful advice, guess ill be off to google then, will let you know how I get on (bare with me Im female)

40 Nm then two lots of 60degrees is correct. I did mune no problem.

It is recomendeed that you only reuse the bolts 5 times so you may be unlucky.

You are folowing the sequence of tightning them all to 40Nm then all 60degrees etc, rather than bolt 1 40Nm then ..... and then bolt 2 40Nm.......

Yep I knew about the bolts been reused, so i took no chances and bought new ones, thanx for the info your a star....

Not sure if I was very clear in the last post. You need to do them all up together progresivly and not each one all the way first time.

Let us know how you get on
