I'd be prepared to pay this much for a proper rack:

Yep, I never do!!
Although I did think if getting a soft top to fold up on the odd sunny day!

Only thing is, I'd need to put rubber supports between the rack and hardtop to support it like the SD rack, so would need a hardtop fitted to do it

I could live with that!
"If" I ever took the roof off the rack would just have to come off too.
It's not like I'd ever remove it anywhere other than home otherwise I'd have to FedEx it home!!!

Haha yeah you couldn't just chuck it in the back of the car for a bit

I guess the other option is to make a safari roof rack that sits between the original roof rails, that way it still sits low on the roof but easier to fit.
Could still secure to the front mounts above the front window

They are made from good quality 1" tubing
And terrible powder coating. Mine is about two and half year on my roof, and I see that I need to repaint it ;) (some little bubbles on coat) , but it's still the best rack ever made for FL :D

Optional Phenolic ply deck is slip resistant & strong enough to stand on
How looks original fixing for deck ? I would like to mount it on mine (and add some supports for roof tent) but wondering how SD fix it. By "P" clips ?

Can't put it between the rails as there's no strength then. Needs to be sat on the rails for support and spreading the load, otherwise any load will just pull on the bars and twist them

If its a safari roof rack with the raised section all the way round, could the top ring mount on top of the existing 3dr roof rails & the bottom sit on rubber mounts on the roof?
Just thinking of ways to keep it as low as possible so it looks better.

Or the new roof rack could all weld to a section that will replace the original cross bar on the 3dr roof rails?

Does anyone know what weight the original 3dr roof rails will take?

75kg I think
Your idea of having the top rail mount to the rails is good actually, obviously you'd lose some load width though as any load would have to sit between the rails

How big are they, look quite small!

See that one still comes from the USA, has to be with the 3 week delivery time!

Mine has a bit of corrosion appearing but not sure I want it painted all shiny on my 2003 truck, lol.

Mine is attached with P clips, although most are needing replaced now so looking into stainless/galvanised alternatives.
