well after many hours fooking about, stripping parts off to find a faulty one we finally realised today that the main spline into the transfer box had been completely stripped of it's splines, so we put the spare one i had from my old disco, and the box will go back in next week.
hope it fooking works!!!!

has anyone else had all the splines stripped out of the transferbox???

Wasn't it this very problem for which a cross-drilled main-shaft was made?

yep , mine are worn to foook , and every gear change clonks like fooook:mad:

so that would explain why the R reg box was beefier than the N reg box when we opened them up;)
so the later box is better?

The later R380/LT230 boxes were beefed up, can't remember when the change was made, but have seen it mentioned quite a few times.

Had a quick look on Microcat, the Disco 1 R380 had 3 mainshafts, only the latest is serviced. Disco II has the one shaft only.

The LT230 main input gear changed as well, and there's also a change on the Disco 2 for that part.
