So the girls coming off road for 2 weeks. Can't afford mental prices being quoted for welding work etc and not confident enough in my own welding to do major chassis stuff yet (just never get chance to practice) but have finally managed to get my father to do it...he's very slick with an arc welder but is a nightmare to get to do anything...wait a year sort of scenario.

So jumping on this chance.

Going to do rear cross member and both bulkhead outriggers.

So...high capacity crossmember...are there any other fixings that need ordered or is it just the cross member? My rear tub has been all chopped at etc as was tipper at one point? I have bought new rear tub and have decided to put back to standard hence wondering if any other fittings needed?

Bulkhead outriggers...do I just need these or any bolts etc that I should order up?

Finally...any tips on doing the outriggers??? How to do I ensure they are positioned correctly...not confident one of mine is correct at moment hence wanting some tips on lining up new ones.

Oh and do I need to ensure doors are adjusted to ideal position before removing outriggers or is this totally irrelevant? Just asking as have a door that is out of sack.

Lots of queries but would appreciate any advice..??I've read lots but just want to clarify these things as I want to have everything ready.

Its quite difficult/impossible to weld the new outriggers on with the footwell in place. Generally both are knackered so most folks replace the footwell as part of the job, makes the outrigger a lot easier.

When I did mine I just put a jack under the outer sill channel to support bulkhead whilst old outrigger is removed. Normally easier to disc the bolt off and fit a new one as previous post suggests.

Thanks for tips...you meaning the actual welded footwell rather than the bolted plates on bottom of mine? The fottwell areas seem OK but if need be I will just cut them out.

Oh heresba question.???...my rear cross member has 2 welded brackets that the hi cap tub attaches to. I notice one bracket has split. I also notice you can buy rear cross members with the brackets on them. But they are few quid extra. You reckon it would be easier just to buy one of those. Pm'd pressrake as suggested but no word back as yet so may have to just go ahead and order up because as mentioned this is like a once in a lifetime chance to actually get my father to help with anything...difficult man to get to do anything at all...shame because he's one of those annoying people that is just very good at everything involving the use of tools.

Funny though...he's not keen on the mig...much prefers the arc...but seems dab hand with it...even welds exhausts with the arc!

Although he knows knowt about land rovers so you could say I'm directing the show...he's just on hand to do the welding.

no pm!

Resent to you. Don't know why it didn't go through...apologies.

Right folks..so assuming my crossmember is coming from press brake...

My hi cap tub has been chopped at underneath to accommodate tipping frame etc. I notice there are little plate brackets on top of the crossmember which have all been half chopped off rather raggedly.

But I have a new unbotched rear tub to fit off a much younger model....

Are there any other wee bits I need to get for the crossmember area? I ask because, as mine has been chopped at and the tub chopped at, Im not sure how the rear crossmember attaches to the tub....if it even does that is?

Spoke to press brake (Clive)...x member ordered. Very helpful chap...no nonsense...just somebody that really knows their stuff and you can't argue about the price for a made to order 6mm x member.
