Was involved in an attempted "crash for cash" scam on my way to work last night.Perry Barr area of north Birmingham. Unfortunately for them, I've seen far too many "crash for cash" videos on the web . Luckily enough I realized what they were up to when they slowed enough to let other traffic pass on the right, so the lead car could immediately make his getaway once the staged "accident" occurred and thus be another untraceable mystery car that got away. So, the lead car slams his anchors on, 2nd car does the same, but I managed to get round without hitting it, watching the lead car now shoot off at speed . The other car pulls up next to me and the driver starts shouting about how the other driver slammed his brakes on and that he has a car full of passengers, before making a sharp exit when I give him a few choice words and then point to my DASHCAM and how the footage will end up with the insurance companies and police.
Lead car grey Vauxhall Insignia KM62ORH
Rear car White Ford Mondeo LR08URW
Suspects all Asian males

Will try to upload the video later.

Make sure you get it to the police they might be known to them.

Not sure of the implications of posting it here if it might possibly be used later in evidence

interesting reg

LR08URW
IS showing as insured on the Motor Insurance Database today.
The details on the MID are:
Vehicle Make/Model: FORD TRANSIT

Comes under data protection laws.......just give a copy to the police.

I don't think it does - as the incident happened in a public place the people on the video could not have reasonably have expected privacy, no criminal offences have been committed in making the recording and uploading it to a public website.

If it goes viral or you accuse them of criminal acts in the video description they have the option of taking legal action to have the video removed and/or claim compensation but this is a civil matter, not criminal, and unlikely to succeed if the video is a true and accurate representation of events. You should be careful what you put in the description though...

I would urge anyone who drives regularly in cities to get a dashcam - they're 20 quid on e-bay. I was hit in a carpark recently by someone reversing out of a parking space, he never accepted responsibility and said I was going "a bit quick". I advised his insurer that I had a recording of the incident and they accepted responsibility within 20 mins (they may have done anyway but it was good to know i had a backup plan...)

Police just told me to contact my insurance company who will have their own fraud investigation team so they can look at the footage and share any details with other insurers incase the registrations tally with any claims present or future .

I have investigated 2 of those today. Our insured both fell victim to them.

Both happened on roundabouts and involved 2 vehicles as mentioned above. Both stopped in the middle of roundabouts with no reason to do so.

I have cameras front and rear in my car........

Here is a sensible driver (???) that I caught and passed on to police

Mondeo could be LR08UPW. The plate is partially obscured by what looks like a taxi license plate. BUT there was nothing else on the car to identify it as a taxi. No phone number, firm name or any radio.

Are they going to be prosecuted for criminal taste in music? :lalala:

I have 2 front/back they were a god send when a man scratched the side of my car for no reason ,he did not have a police record before he does now and a £600 fine. I lost out as I was just swapping my car and the garage knock a bit of the exchange price for mine and the police did not want to know about that thanks for the heads up on the registration numbers.

This is the point of it for me - even if the incident doesn't affect you directly you might just catch something which could make a huge difference to someone else and stop a criminal.

Surely this incident is dangerous driving?

Great pictures - what camera have you got?

I have a Blackvue DR400HD front & rear. They have been superseded now but they do a whole range. They are fitted with powers magic boxes and are on all the time unless the battery goes below a set voltage or time (12 hours set on mine) which ever happens first.

Might look into getting me some of them, quality looks excellent!

My brother had one in his car, it went into a bodyshop (through BMW) to get some work done, his camera recorded the bodyshop lads thrashing the tits off his car daily for a period of almost 2 weeks (was only meant to be in 3 days), pushing it around their bodyshop with their feet etc... It all ended up getting very legal!! BMW still use the bodyshop though
