Crash barrier bumpers,some thoughts

Whilst towing a caravan across country recently on a thankfully (unusually) uneventful trip I had time to ponder......and saw that some of the crash barriers might make (admittedly weighty) heavy duty bumpers for a D1.

There seem to be two common types,a rounded "W" section and a slightly rhomboid box section,both galvanised and both with bolt on curved around end pieces. Now the box one would probably be more compatable but the "W" section more fun !

Is there anyone out there in the civil engineering/highways maintainance sector that could advise as to the suitability and availability of this stuff ? Its only a whimsical enquiry but it would go well on my farm vehicle........
 
armco will defo crumple, the squarer stuff maybe not, but is suspect it'll be useless unless under tension like when at the road side
 
Mark-d....where am I going to find it ? Thats why I asked if there was anyone out there who worked on the roads mate ! I dont fancy my chances of sitting in the middle of the M5 with a couple of spanners ! And hey,if it IS designed to crumple under impact then the safty nuts cant have any complaints about it can they ? :D:D

There is usually some for sale in the back of Farmer`s Weekly but it isn`t cheap. And its a lot heavier than it looks
I wouldn`t use crash barrier for a bumper, its designed so that if hit the standard retaining bolts shear off and the barrier flexes, in theory reducing the impact and assisting the car to stop
I suspect you would also have to be careful about legality, and insurance - car bumpers are in theory carefully designed to minimise injury to pedestrians for example, with over-riders and crash cans or crumple zones factored in to the overall design of the car.
 
Vehicle bumpers are designed to absorb impact so...an excellent idea shocker. I'm actually wondering why all vehicles didnt get fitted with these as standard?? Out standing!!
 
in short they wont behav as crash barriers when fitted to a motor cos they aint under tension.A decent box section would be better (if you like to ram stuff)
 
Scarecrows.....now thats a whole different kettle of fish but yeah, I can see um as a bumper. Nice and soft but would need packing well. No straw hanging out and all that!
 
I tried using holiday makers tied all round the outside of my D1,a la waffen SS.....but I got in trouble with the tourist board....not unlike the SS themselves,actually.......
 
They did seem very tense,the tourists,as I hurtled round the lanes with my eyes shut,so I reckon they made an excellent bumper,being under tension and that
 
Emmett's as bumpers. Yet again shocker.....outstanding! Where you get your Emmett's from, can't imagine there's many in Bodmin?
 
You catch 'em at Asda when they stop off to do their shopping before heading out to the concentration camps on the coast.They'm easy to spot,they're the ones buying multiple cases of lager and complaining that there isnt the same bread and pies as at home on sale.And moaning that the pastys have got all lumps in them instead of the puree that they are used to.........
 
I knows um well. They need educating that pasties dont have fookin peas in!! I'm back home soon and im gonna find me a new bumper!!
