Hi Guys how easy or hard is it to change the front crankcase seal as my one is leaking or is there a way too add some sort of sealer to it to stop this,as this was put on my MOT advisories today. Is it worth trying to do it myself or put it in the garage.

4.0 lt petrol 1998 v8 just wondering if it was possible to change it without taking half the engine out and where to get a seal from.

The front seal is slightly more involved than the rear since the rear can be forced out with a (in my case) gasket scraper...

The front seal, I drilled out using a 1.5mm drill bit, then screwing in a 2mm self tapping screw and pulling the seal out with a vice grip holding the screw and a rubber mallet to shock the seal off it's seat.

The face of the seal has a steel body behind the rubber which needs a drill bit to force a hole through before you can turn a self tapping screw into it.

The rubber somehow "glues" itself into the alloy and will not simply come off without some serious persuasion.

Once it's out and the new seal in, the engine will be happy once again :)

That'll be why it is usually the rear that fails.

Would it be better to remove the radiator and the viscose fan to get better access to the crankcase seal, I know the crankcase pully has to come off,so just wondering

so which way does the viscous fan nut move and the same for the crankcase pully are they anticlockwise because the engine rotates clockwise.

well new seal fitted, Hooray let's hope this makes the **** at the MOT centre happy as this had been leaking for about 10 years as just a slight weep and if I remember right the last time I topped the oil up was 2 years ago, that was before we went abroad for 2 weeks. But the annoyingly thing is on last years MOT it has an advisory of the oil leak this year it's a total failure even though I only done 1960 miles since the last MOT, I think they wanted money of me to do the job,so going to take it back and then find somewhere else. Thanks Guys for ALL your help.
