Hi,

I have recently read that the crankcase breather filter is now recommended to be replaced every 12k miles. My freelander has done about 84k and I don't think it has ever been done :eek:

As I have just had the freelander serviced I thought I'd take the opportunity to replace the crankcase filter. Having a look around t'internet the filter varies in price considerably from £6.15 (britpart) up to £29 (landrover) + VAT and I called my local dealer who wanted £55 :eek:

Will the cheaper one be ok? Is there much difference in quality or is it just a case of LR inflating the price?

Thanks

Chris

go this route

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/bmw-crankcase-breather-170050.html

i.e. fit the bmw separator instead .. cost .. about £23

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the britpart @ £6.15 is probably just the bog-roll type filter on it's own ..
should be ok ..
even from a LR dealer .. the filter by itself shouldn't cost that much more ..
btw: when i swapped the old filter for the bmw part ..
i cleaned the old filter in white spirit .. looks like it could be re-used
go for the bmw separator part .. no need to worry about a filter clogging up
Just read a post by Singvogel in another thread which confirms what you are saying that its a seperator, nor really a filter as such. In that case I might go ahead & fit it :)
The other advantage is once fitted you can more or less forget it. I bought my 06 TD4 brand new, it was serviced by main stealer for the first three years. To be honest I don't think the old filter had ever been changed the condition it was in when I replaced it with the BMW mod. The old filter is supposed to be changed at every service, not so with the BMW mod.
As I understand it the reason for the 'pcv thing' is to catch any oil fumes and return the oil to the crankcase.
It's not meant to be a filter as such.
BMW - who made the engine - call the upgrade vortex/cyclone part by the more appropriate name of 'Oil Separator'.
So the separated oil is returned to the sump to pass through the normal filter element.
BMW now recommend servicing it every 3rd oil change.
I had a look inside mine after 30K and it was as clean as when I fitted it - I just gave the vortex, and the cover part with the spring in, a rinse in white spirits and put it all together again.
Does anyone have a direct link to buy one of the uprated bmw parts? Id rather buy online than go into the bmw parts section lol.
