Hello people

Having a bit of a problem with my 2004 Td5 110.

During a recent gearbox change, I made a very common mistake and damaged the wiring connected to the crankshaft position sensor on the bellhousing.

The wiring snapped off leaving not much to work with, but I managed to fit a new plug (and new sensor to be on the safe side) using some crimp connections.

However, the engine now starts very intermittently - sometimes it will fire right up after half a turn, and sometimes will sit cranking for 5-10 seconds before firing.

I have read that there is supposed to be a third 'shielding' wire in this part of the loom - and it looks like mine has snapped off even shorter than the rest of the wiring, leaving only a few strands sticking out of the heatshrink.

Where does this shielding wire need to go to? Is it possible to extend it? Or am I going to have to replace the whole loom...? :confused:

isnt the crank sensor plug the same one as is used i think on the indicators, if so could you not use one of them
 
1. did you disturb physicaly the sensor too or not? ...cos it's very sensitive to the air gap untill the target ring

2.the crank sensor's wiring has an electromagnetic shield connected to earth on the ECU side to not let any interference to disturb the crank signal(see attachment)...i have a feeling that if you plug in a tester you'll get a "noisy crank signal" fault code, you better check that to make sure cos you can't change only the sensor's wiring cos it's part of the engine harness

try to rebuild somehow that shield untill the plug... once i had to build a kind of faraday's cage around the sensor too to get rid of the starter's electromagnetic interference, if you worked with the starter too make sure all the contacts are clean and well tightened, also the older it is the worst "noise" it makes as the brushes will spark on the rotor
