Hi new member looking for sound tips and advice. Just taken the head off my 300 tdi discovery to find the head gasket blown and cracks in exhaust port.:( Is this common and is there a cause that can be fixed so it wont happen again as a new head is now required. Some one told me it may be an egr fault causing overheating inside the head? Is it worth blanking off the egr? Any advice welcome thanks. Martin.

Can you give us more information about cracks in the exhaust port" ?

Don't worry about the EGR failing causing this problem. Practically everyone on this list has dumped their EGRs, always with good outcomes.

Don't scrap your head till a competent person has seen it, tested it for flatness and porosity, and condemned it. You never know, but it may be fine all along, or it may just need a light skim.

The head has been to an engineers for testing and is cracked in exhaust port. The gasket had blown big time between 2 & 3 cylinders and got hot. It has melted a senor this sits on the top of the head in the middle but I'm not sure what that is for as the temp sensor is at the front of the head. It has been skimmed before and there is already a new radiator fitted. I have not owned it very long so its history is unknown. Thanks.
