Thanks for that , going to sort it tomorrow . So wire is earth and switch earths the wire
Door switch is a spring loaded contact switch, the switch itself is earthed to the body via the securing screw and the wire connects to the terminal on the plunger, you open the door the spring pushes the plunger towards the contacts and completes the circuit, close the door and the action of the plunger being pushed back into the switch breaks the circuit.

Thanks for that , Just tried and no joy . So earthed it and still nothing . Theres meant to be a terminal block at the back of the dash , I can't find it . Light works fine . Had it out a bit of corrosion but it works and so it's got a live and the plate is earthed , . No idea what to do next . Big hammer

Does the door light switch on the other door operate the light correctly?

No neither work . Theres no rear door switch ?
Unlikely (but not improbable) that both door switches have failed but if you have grounded the wire and it doesn't work you need to be looking a common issues rather than a single switch. I assume the light works on the manual setting, do you have a factory immobiliser fitted (as that controls the light when you have one)?

Yes works on manual switch and No immobilizer .Sure someone mentioned a Green thing ? Behind the dash dims lights slowly etc . Even on my 1996 300 defender ? . Can't recal seeing anything but will pull the dash/clocks out again and check . But said that if not if it had been removed to join the wires together but i could not see any loose wires , apart from a tiny black earth and a tiny green/red ? Lok like dash warning wires for dual batteries maybe , but would reach the redundent warning lights . I will take the light out again and test the switch positions to earth ? . I've ordered another light and switches , the only thing is this bit of green corrosion on the lamp , But it works ok even earthing the intrigated circuits , but i need to do it checking switch positions , never thought just wanted to see if it worked .

Sorted , took light back out and wired a small light direct to the main plug , Yipee it works door open off door closed , New lamp ordered . Thanks to everyone for all your help without which I would of given up . And I've learnt a bit also . It's Trully great how members help others .

Glad you got it sorted, the immobiliser was my mistake I used that term when I should have said a remote key fob. That is what signals the green ECU behind the dash and turns the light on when you disarm the alarm and keeps it on for about 20 seconds

It would be nice to have a immobiliser , But i managed to fit my isolator switch on the batt box , Just need to sort out how not to destroy my alt if it gets turned off . (very slim chance) so i may not bother . I have a national luna intelligent solenoid for dual batts , so will put it in the batt box . But is a question elsewhere . So fingers crossed as soon as the new light comes all should be well , and i will my working light lol , a lot of trouble for a light .
