Hi all

I bought a W reg (2000) Freelander 1 petrol a month or so ago. I have already done a few things to it (replaced window regulator and an instrument panel bulb). It’s running fine but I wanted to tidy up a couple of things on the vehicle. I do have a Haynes manual for the car and it doesn’t seem to cover these bits and bobs, thought maybe you guys could help. 3 queries, namely;

Whilst at low speeds I can hear a relatively high pitched whirring noise. I don’t think its major and is probably a timing belt. But I don’t know where to start to diagnose the fault and fix it myself. Any pointers as to where to start?

Directly below the windscreen (on the exterior of the car, in-between the windscreen and bonnet) there are a few air inlets. There is a kind of sponge sitting just beneath the grate, looks as though it’s an early filter for bugs etc. Its degraded and I want to replace it. Any ideas on how I can get hold of this part or can I just cut something to size?

Either side of these air vents, at each corner of the bottom of the windscreen, there are black rubber ‘spacers’ or bushes. They fill up the space between the body panels and bonnet. Again, they are quite degraded and brittle. Anybody have any idea as to what they are called and how I can get hold of replacements?

Thanks in advance for the information.

Great, thanks Optimus. Found it at Green-oval.com and now trying to open it. Looks like fun!

JESUS!... Most gaylander owners are quite happy if the bloody things keep running, never mind replacing a bit of foam that you can't see...

I thought the two questions would be:

1. Where's the best place to buy matches nowadays?
2. How little petrol can I get away with using, will 5L be enough to ensure it's well and truly destroyed before the fire engine arrives?

Pop into a landrover dealership they will tell you what the parts are called and give you part numbers and prices. It would be more prudent to save your money for when it is needed, i.e. vcu and ird issues, also timing belt changes, oil changes, filter changes, cv joints, clutches etc.
