Couple of Questions on 109 Rebuild.

Couple of things bugging me.
First where do these foam seals fit ?, they are to small to go over end of shaft, also think I am missing a washer that goes on after them.
Second think I need one of these bearings that go in top of steering where steering wheel fits, are these replaceable ?.

The foam seals I think go inside the driving members on the end of the shafts. Not sure how important they are.

With the steering box, you can get a kit from Paddock, or Craddock, can't remember which, that has everything you need to rebuild a steering box, new balls, both sizes, seals, bearings, etc. Think they are about 22 quid plus VAT.
 
If I remember right the bearing for the top of the steering column is a separate item to the box overhaul kit. Also I think there are 2 different sizes. If you still have an original shaft then get an original land rover bearing and grease it up as they come dry. Britpart do one but it is fractionally a bigger diameter so there will be play if you use it. When I rebuilt my box with a new shaft I had to file it to get the original LR bearing to fit. I did have a BP one but I broke it somehow, I forget what I did now.
 
The felt/rubber things go on the end of the half shaft squashed up by nut and washer. Only for use on 10 spline shafts.
Thanks mine are 24, do I still need the missing washer or can I just tighten the big nut on ?

Think The Box is OK Mate just that ballbearing thingy at top where Steering Wheel attaches, everything turns as it should but it makes a noise as if its not turning smoothly, if you know what I mean.

Not quite sure what vintage of Series we are talking here, but from memory there are two types of steering box. Early 2 and 2a s had a box that you could fit the flasher unit for the optional indicators on. Later 2a and 3s had a box that had the indicator unit as standard, because they were compulsory by then.

Yes think he is right after a bit of googling found this. Column - Find Land Rover parts at LR Workshop Now how the hell do you change them ?
 
Will do a bit more searching to se if anyone has changed one before, knowing me Ill Bash to hard and break something :)
I have changed them but it was about 30 years ago, so memory is indistinct, but I think that is what I did.

You will be hard put to break much on a Series, your body is usually the weakest link! :D

I know thought id snapped my thumb the other day fitting brake shoes, turns out it wasnt that bad though considering all the shouting and swearing that went on. :rolleyes:
 
It does just prise out but watch you don't let all the ball bearings fall down the column because they will end up in the steering box. Prise it up by the bit that touches the outter column and not the inner bit, I made that mistake and had balls everywhere! You should have seen the state of mine it was in a shocking state, no balls in it, and the 2 halves of the body had almost ground through each other.

You should have seen the state of mine it was in a shocking state, no balls in it, and the 2 halves of the body had almost ground through each other.
The only lubrication to that bearing is from a spiral groove in the steering column, which is supposed to lift oil up the column as the steering is turned.
So on vehicles that stand a lot of the time, the bearing rarely gets oiled.
Might be an idea to just run a couple of drops of 90 weight down the column from the top occasionally.

Thanks mate, might try getting a load of grease down there first, to see if it makes any difference.
 
To change the bearing at the top of the column, you need to take the wheel, indicator switch and ignition switch off, so the top of the column is clear of attachments, then, you can loosen the clamp bolt on the top of the steering box, and slide the outer column and bearing off.

So, you can replace the bearing at the bench, with no danger of anything dropping down into the steering box.
 
Well made a right pigs ear of it tonight, new I would, should have left the blody thing alone.
Wont budge, how the hell do I het this out ?

From the looks of that you have the steering box out of the landy. I am going on memory from a few years back now so bear with me. I would take the colum shaft off. There is a pinch bolt at the bottom if you slack this off the outter column will lift off. I would grind down the chewed up lip on the bearing so it will pass down the shaft. Then you shuld be able to carefull cut the inner bearing off the coulmn and something to colapse the outter part in the outter column, use the ever abused screwdriver to colapse it inward. For the love of God dont take the bit the pinch bolt is in off unless you are rebuliding the whole box, you will spend ages swearing at thoses freaking ball bearings arrrgh its all coming back oi34t083t3409u-095-(*)*&£)(*$Y!
