Couple of Noob Questions

Had my 2006 Freelander 1 TD4 a couple of weeks now and worked through most of the issues I had. Anyway a couple of questions if possible :

1. Cigarette lighter socket, the manual says I can't use anything else but the cigarette lighter in there, is that correct? No USB adapters etc? I ask as I dont have any other power points in the car, nothing in the centre console etc and going on a long journey soon would be handy to use it to charge things but dont want to bugger up anything either.

2. EGR blanking, I am considering it, as I have just had the MOT done, I will keep the EGR for next years MOT. Are there any drawbacks from blanking the EGR? Will it cause any issues, damage or fault codes?

No codes. But it's sensible to clean the accumulated goop out the inlet tract, to get the best out of the EGR removal. ;)

Oh yes one more thing, is there a knack to getting in without scraping your head against the top of the door frame?

It's because the seats are higher than a normal car, while the door frame is quite deep. This makes it necessary to duck as you get in. I must have banged my head hundreds of times when I first got a FL1. I've had 5 over the last 10 years, so don't bang my head anymore.

At the back of the center console (between the front seats) is an ash tray. This is built into a plastic panel that clips into the console. I thought all cars also had an aux power socket there as in this pic...

However, I believe I have seen pics where there is no power socket. I presume your car is like this. I wonder if the loom is still there even if the panel was changed? From memory it is just a small twin core wire with a rectangular push on connector. You can remove the storage box from the console by lifting the lid and removing the 4 screws - you'd then be able to see if there was a wire floating around like this! You can see the wire on the first page of that thread above in the pics of my car with the console removed.

If there is, you could maybe get a replacement panel with both ash tray and aux power socket from a breakers (if your's looks the same shape) or a replacement console. Or maybe just build your own USB power sockets into the console where ever you want them.

From memory, the feed to this socket is different to the cigarette lighter - runs on a different fuse and may be permanently live. Forget exactly but be careful working on it if its there.

Not all, as it was an option that came with the rear ashtray.

That's correct. There's a blanking plate, if the ashtray/ power socket isn't fitted.

The power is behind the panel, so is easy to retrofit a socket.
EBay is full of universal power sockets that just need a hole in the blanking plate, to make them fit.

No I dont have the ash tray or power socket there, its just blank. For an HSE model seems they certainly didn't choose any options, following on from a previous thread of mine, there is no heated windscreen and no fuel powered heater either. Having a look around at some HSE's of my year not many of them had the heated screens either.

If the power is behind the panel I am guessing I could just get a second hand freelander part?

Ok another question instead of starting new threads, are the speakers in the Harmon Kardon models the same as standard Freelanders? Its just that the rear right speaker of mine has no sound but the tweeter works, maybe wiring, could be speaker, just didn't know if there was a difference between speakers on HK & standard models.

Wiring should be there - remove the centre cubby box and look for a 2 way connector with purple and black wires from memory.

The speakers are different between HK and standard. If tweeter works then wiring is ok as it piggy backs off the main speaker - most likely main speaker has failed
 
Just replace the speakers with a decent quality 6.5 inch driver, and drill the 4 holes to mount them. ;)

A couple of other FL1 owners including me have fitted JVC replacement driver's. These sounds brighter than the HKs and being slightly larger, reproduce the lower frequencies with more authority.

Ok, EGR Blanking, I am about to buy a stainless steel one from the bay, but before I do are there any negatives to blanking off the egr? Basically don't want to end up doing anything that could cause damage or stress to the engine.

I'd avoid shiny, as an EGR delete will now fail the MOT, so anything that looks out of place, could well draw attention to its self.

If you do fit one, make sure it has the "penny on a stick" mount for the flexible exhaust link pipe. If it doesn't, then the flexible pipe breaks off, giving you a whole world of extra work.
