Could it be the gearbox?

I have recently brought a 1.8 petrol 2001 freelander with 98000km on the clock and a FSH. now at 101000km im getting a loud grinding noise comming for the gearbox on the overrun, in addition when at full lock in reverse i get horrible clunk/crunching sound sand it pops out gear!
have checked cv joints at front and all is well. pls give me an idea what it might be as it is a tad annoying.:confused:
 
I'd start by droppin the propshaft off and seeing if the noise reduces or dissapears, what can happen is the VCU seizes and if left unchecked will result in rapid wear of the IRD internals ...

have a search for vcu and ird ;)
