Only had it 10 days so far, lol.
 
Had mine a while now and so far its only cost me the price of a battery, i cant really add the price of service parts because no matter what you drive you have to service it, and im not including the price of the PSI box as thats my choice to have it, i think it all comes down to how well looked after you Rangie is... and the age and mileage. after all everything that is man made has a "shelf life" nothing last forever but regular servicing and greasing etc etc certainly helps.
 
2000 P38 4.0 hse currently on 125k miles

Still needs s#itloads doing to stop it wandering and make it handle etc. like radius arm bushes, shocks, tailgate is blistering and needs an oil service...

Thats 14 months running costs aside of the fuel put through it and the £45,000.00 depreciation since new...Priceless....?
 
forgot to mention I bought a new engine of a stealer in Torquay ( ithink it was down there ) for 1500 quid as he was clearing out all p38 spares about 4 yrs ago it was a thor so had to modify it to gems so in total 2100 quid fitted bloody bargain so my total is actually £4800 but that is over 6 years and approx 90 k on this one so it is cheap as most of these repairs last anything from 5- 10 yrs and the poor sod that bought it new lost a grand a month not agrand a year
 
Involuntary purchases on my 92 Classic with M51 diesel: (in about 5 months ownership)

£500 welding to rear body cross member & boot floor & rear diff pan
£100 ish for new injector number 4
£100 N/S/R axle oil seal
£20 chemical metal to repair rear diff pan (welding didn't work) and leaking sump
£40 new drive belt tensioner
£40 tensioner lever arm
£10 drive belt
£13 thermostat
£60 in-tank fuel pump
£2.11 FIP seal

thermostat was the best buy - gave me hot air in 5 mins and perhaps 5mpg.
 
When I started doing numbers they all merge into a sort of hazy memory .....

I do know for certain without any doubt that the '98 4.6 V8 was about twice the price to run as my second wife ........

The '98 2.5 Diesil runs at about a half or even a third of a wife ..........

I've just put a deposit down on a 96 range 2.5 diesel dse, looking at all this it may just be worth loosing ha ha ha ha

Joking apart, when i pick it up on wednesday, i will be booking it in for a service straight away while i have the cash spare, i had 4k to spend on a RR, so went for an older, well looked after one, apparently its had an engine rebuild 50000 miles ago, and also just had a new radiator fitted

Going to get brand new plugs and air filter fitted asap too
 
welcome Hickman I am sure you will love it and remember this lot fix them so they work all the time and fix them themselves they are in my opinion brilliant value for money and on here you can get advice for free just a pity you bought a tractor instead of a proper rangie:D

ha ha, took it out on saturday for a test run, loved it, despite the age, its in absolute immaculate condition, must have been really looked after

I wouldn't waste your money on new glowplugs unless it's difficult to start when cold, even then I'd look at the battery first.
If it's an auto make sure the auto box and transfer box oil is changed and budget to replace the suspension airbags if they have not been done.

What sort of prices would the suspension be at roughly

TWO sets front C/L motors £600
Replacement BECM £365
New RF unit £196 (in progress!)

All above (plus labour) under warranty from garage.

Own spend:

12.00 Wiper blades

40.00 Replacement stereo with bluetooth (Lidl special!)

and .....er.....oh yeah, the lil fuel I have used in the lil time it's actually been here!

If you shop around on Ebay etc you can get 4 Arnott gen 2 airbags for around £280. Curiously they are cheaper on Ebay than buying direct from P38 Spares. I reckon they are better than the originals.

how much do you think it would cost done in the garage, independent of course

Looks scary but its not a lot to put a motor like these back together I have assumed that all the mechanical failures you would have no matter what you were driving and of course not all of the above go wrong with every car

Just noticed you have a 4.6 LPG. Can I ask roughly what mpg you're getting as I bought one that'd just been converted in December and was told it would be uneconomical for the first 1000 miles until run in then would be ok.....it isn't! Am getting approximate 1.5 mpg using LPG....help!

You sure......1.5 :eek::eek::eek:

Now if that's really 15, then about right on gas. (cheaper to buy but a lil less miles per gallon)
