I am just entered the world of Landrover with a 2008 Discovery 3 which I bought in december. I found a fault and had a LR dealer have a look who have said their is a fault when moving up from gear 1 to 2 where there is a bit of thud.

The dealer has had an autotransmission specialist have a look at it and state:

Requires transmission rebuild and torque convertor
requires mechatronic unit

please note mechatronic unit is a 7 to 10 day order

all parts warranty for 12 months or12,000 miles whatever comes first

With a cost of £1900 + VAT which the dealer wants me to pay half due to the car having done 100K.

Does this seem price seem about right for that work?
I have no real clue about cars so would appreciate your advice.

Who did you get it from. Have you checked to see if this fault has ever had a Landrover recall notice.

I'm confused as to why the dealer is offering to do half the work for free?? Is it under Warranty?? If so he should be doing all the work for free???

Think you need to clarify your first post????

How would I check if it has been part of a LR recall? Would that be for all of that type? It was in a LR dealer garage who quoted me £2500 + labour + VAT to repair.

The dealer who sold it says that due to the car being 100K, it may be wear and tear expected for a car with this mileage. I am hesitant off pushing for a full refund as he hasnt sold the car I traded in and likewise I really dont want that back. I also love the Discovery that I bought - apart from the fault!

Not sure if this should be a new thread - but I have so many tears in my eyes cant see the screen clearly

The engine in my discovery 3 is now cooked - having spent 4 hours on back of tow truck - garage says needs new engine - cost about 9K.

Car only worth about 14K!

Does anyone know where i can get an engine fitted cheaper?

Its a 2007/2008 TD6 HSE 2.7 :crutch:

any help greatly appreciated.

second hand engine from Colne or on ebay would be worth a punt. Feel for you but would'nt touch a Disco 3/4 simply cos of the repair costs. (that said my 2 is currently disabled with an imobiliser fault!)

try a google on reconditioned engines must be cheaper than £9k!!!

prob lots of places but you are were??? how about getting one from a write off then small garage fitting

they say 20K miles or 6 months?

Mixed reviews online - would be comforting to hear someone who is a regular from this forum who has some recent experience of them.

The other guys are National Engine Centre in Cardiff - very similar in price and warranty.

Have you heard of either?

Oil and water starvation - overheated to the point I think it was about to catch fire! - and as a fire fighter I can normally judge that quite well!!

Both the garage who originally recovered me and my local LR garage (who has a great reputation) have both said the engine will need replaced.

At 9K it is not viable really - but at 3.5 - 4K it becomes an option (although not sure which piggy bank I will rob!!)

I have found another localish garage who do reconditioned engines offering to do it for 4K - they have been operating a few years and can't find a single review!

Engine Engineering Ltd in Paisley - anyone heard of them or any of the others?
