cooling problem.. again

Hi All,

On my D2 I have been having cooling issues. About a year ago I had a new radiator. Started losing water yet again so checked everything and spotted leak on cor plugs so replced them. On trip of 120 miles i lost all water again. replaced thermostat.
Still losing water and when it gets up to temperature the water pipes are solid with pressure. when losing water take of filler tank cap and coolant just pumps out.
only thing left would be to change water pump?

Any suggestions? am getting fed up of this now. may chop car D2 and get estate car and series landy for weekends!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

when it first started playing up and losing coolant i thought that it was worse case scenario. but to hear it as well makes me think I should just trade it in. My local garage thinks it could just be the impeller come off the water pump.
Personally I think its the head gasket.

If you run it up to temp with the header cap on and then release (with the fluid at corect level), you will get it coming out as it is a pressurised system. it's also bloody hot and quite risky! (as I read your post).

Run it up from cold with cap off and water at correct level and see if there are any bubbles forming.

Impeller? Doubt it BUT you could tell your local that if he thinks its the impeller then you'll pay providing it is and it cures the problem. No cure, no dosh! Worth a try. You got nothing to loose at this stage.
 
I have a 1998 discovery series 1 and have replaced the Cap and the thermostat, flushed and replace anti freeze, then the next day the water pump packed up, replaced with new pump and new anti freeze, 2 days later the top hose blow, so replaced, now it still uses water and seems to be blowing it over the front of the car, there appears to be no bubbles in the water, what next? I love driving the car, but it now appears I need a wallet full of money the size of the landy. any suggestions
 
Both of these sound like the head gasket.

I had similar problems a while back and did everything else bar the HG until I knew that that was it. As it turned out it wasn't too much of a chore. Took me about a day in total and only one grazed knuckle. My local Landy specialist was going to charge me about £800 do do it and it cost me a day's lost wages and £100 in bits and head skimming.
 
Well I went into my local ford dealer yesterday and bought a mondeo estate. went for a test drive and it did 49mpg. asked how much for mine and got £2500. I shook his hand paid a deposit and walked away with a very heavy heart.
Gutted not to have a landy for the first time in ages. Started looking on autotrader last night to get a cheap series for weekends.
woke up still gutted this morning.
 
My Mondeo 2l tdi does 45 under any circumstances BUT the 95 disco 300Tdi is still the favourite! Good old warhorse with close to 170k miles on it. They're good to work on and don't cost you an arm and a leg - like most of the older generation LR's. Good luck, take your time and get a good un with loads of service history.
