The cooling fan on my 90 hasn't worked since ive had it and the other day it popped my rad because some cowboy put cable ties through it to hold it on... Anyway ive taken it off now, does it really matter if i leave it off? It doesnt seem to over heat but is it likely to if im going very slow in traffic etc?

i should imagine it was electric as it was cable tied to the rad. you can run without them depending on what you do, expect the temp gauge to go up sat in traffic and after motorway runs etc. you can always refit the viscous or get another electric one. i got mine from bolt on bits and have had no problems with it

doubt it, unless your ding heavy towing, mine was without for 6 months, and was fine, only got a bit warm towing the caravan up the M62, and tbh, I now think that was more to do with the rad, cos now its knackered :)

I dont think a viscous fan will be up for the job as its the 200disco engine which sits quite far away from the rad.

Ok ill just keep my eye on the gauge, when i go to pay and play days in heavy mud the gauge goes into the red quite a bit, is that ok to a certain degree?

I would say no, and get a new fan

If i get a electric fan will i be ok wiring it straight from the battery on a switch?

You'll need a relay as it draws a fair bit of current but you can wire it via a switch or a thermostatic switch or both. I've got mine on a switch at the moment but I'm going to get a three way switch and a thermostat so I can have Auto-On-Off options. That way the fan will come on at the temp set by the thermostatic switch or you can manually control it or have it off altogether

I've got the same, but currently have it only on-off. I've gt a thermo switch that was fitted but not wired properly, i got my head round wiring but took the switch out to start with. It's on the list of jobs. Generally I switch the fan on if im in slow traffic when its hot weather, the temp gauge is fairly steady when driving around

Im going to go down your route and have it on- off only, there is a thermo switch/dial under the hood but that might be why the other fan didnt work so ill scrap it :)

the first one has a better thermostatic switch IMO, but if you want just on/off I think they just sell the fans by themselves.

i have the second one fitted in my conversion landy. it works just fine. i took a wire from my aux fuse box to relay to power it. you may also put a switch on this if you are deep wading to turn it off. with a feed from a spare 12v that was under the bonnet to the relay so it is only on when the ignition is on. simple to fit and as i say no problems with it
