Gidday,

I am on the hunt for a coolant temp sensor. Apparently mine is faulty, and causing the automatic transmission to do some weird gear shifts.

I have made some enquiries and my sensor has only one wire to it whereas according to land rover agents the sensor has 2 contacts. I have looked on ebay and the temp sensors pictured have two pins.

Has anybody come across this before? Would i be adle to fit the two pin sensor? is the fault likely to cause the auto to perform funny shifts ,ie dropping out of lock up and even dropping in to 3rd gear?

Thoughts and advice muchly appreciated.
 
Two sensors on 98 model three on 99 up models. First sensor near injection pump is dash gauge sensor. Will be either, Brown one pin (no aircon) STC2253. Or Blue NSC100820 two pin (with aircon). Second sensor is ECU temp sensor near cylinders 4/5. Should be Green two pin STC2299. Third sensor (year 99 on only) engine overheat sensor (with aircon). Should be Black STC2254.

I had it checked out for an intermittant auto shift problem at a trans specialist. When it faulted he noticed that the coolant temp reading was erratic and that at one stage the coolant temp on live data on his snap on scanner was reading at -41 degrees. The techie says that coolant temp regulates lock up and 3rd 4th gear change., and the sensor is dropping out causing it to shift down to 3rd, ar lock up to drop out.
I will do a bit more homework today, and find out if i can suss out which one is faulty.
 
OK, so the parts i need as far as i know are STC2299, and NSC100820.
Both parts are ex UK and will over 100 pounds plus freight, and these are not even genuine parts.
Does anybody know where i can get the two sensors from at a more reasonable price?

Wammers, mine has the brown 1 pin sensor in, but has air con. The plug that goes on it has only one wire. Do you know if the two pin sensor has a plug with only one wire on it? or is mine a bit out of the ordinary?

If you have a one pin sensor and a one pin single wire replace with the same. It went to 2 pin due to erratic readings with the one pin as I recall due to bad earthing through the block. You could try an earth wire to the sensor or an adjacent bolt, might just fix the problem.

Where are you looking sensors cost nothing like that?

The gauge sensor cannot effect gear changing as far as i am aware.

I got a spare one if you like pm me your address and you can have it it's used but works fine.
Sorry its a green two pin one
Mine is a 99 and I only got two sensors in the head no third one nor any wires for it

Oh one of them. Got a sneaky feeling it should be screwed in somewhere rather than just hanging on a wire. Looks like it's broken off just above the brown plug it should be attached to there, and could be a very good reason for a none start.

Yes wammers it was screw in and I think the front part snapped off. I have yet to find a sensor having one 1 wire :(
