sorry for coming back to this post, if i remove header tank, insert garden hose in the header tank pipe, and have engine running upto temp, would the thermostat open? cos thats what i was doing.

Probably not. The water going in would need to be hot enough to get the stat to open, or at least heat up enough from the heat of the engine to open the stat.

just in case, don't run it up to temp and then use the garden hose, thermal shock is not a good thing
