well that was a complete waste of time.

i have oil in coolant, so i flushed the system to try and clean it all out, however i no its not much point untill i have replaced the oil cooler (which i think is the cause). theres now more oil in the header tank

the can of rad flush didnt work great as i had loads of oil stuck in the pipes everywhere. would flushing the system with pure rad flush help (maybe a bit of water aswell) cos one can dont cut it.

If you flush the coolant with bottom pipe off rad using a garden hose on the bottom pipe from header tank and keep it there till water clear . then to clean header tank just remove from vehicle and use hot water and washing up liquid and a babys bottle brush

i didnt removed stat as thats too much hassle of a td4, i flushed it twice taking off all sorts of pipes and feeding garden hose though all different direction, after filling coolant back up and going for a drive header tank black again.
1 can of rad flush just aint enough

correct me if im wrong - never worked on a td4 - but surely leaving the stat in will prevent you flushing the system properly as it will be closed.

hmmm, i had it flushed by a garage a few weeks ago also, surely he didnt take stat off as it was only a half hour labour job, getting the stat off takes ages.

well when i get round to oil cooler, i will also replace stat anyway, and flush with more rad flush

so would it be ideal to use more than one can of rad flush.

and another thing, the poxy freelander manual stated the coolant capacity was 7.5 litres, so i went to do 50/50 mix, after putting in 3.75 litres of antifreeze, i only had enough space in cooling system for about 1.3 litres of water, so its now more like 20/80 mix, bloody manual

I have not tried it but heard that putting in biological washing powder or a dishwasher tablet into the coolant, letting it get hot and circulated around the cooling system works well to clean it out, just flush well after :)

NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

only use dishwasher LIQUID - never powder, cos it can clog. unless disolved 100%.

....and its got loads of salt in it. Bad very bad to add to an engine

Is that because he int emptied the system as the stat was closed? Or at least some old coolant still in there somewhere.

as i said before in diffrent post almost inpossible to get rid of all oil in cooling system, always comes back in header tank.also oil in cooling system also damages the coolant hoses so keep an eye on them they tend to turn realy soft .been in trade for 30yrs now and never found quick cure for oil in water.

I had similar problem with a SAAB. Globules of oil were still appearing in coolant up to a year after despite many flushes. Changed radiator and hoses but still the oil was there.

i was thinking bout changing the hose, maybe no point, i will just keep flushing it as much as i can once ive replaced oil cooler, im guessing i need new oil cooler as ive heard head gasket on td4 are very rare
