The heater matrix will not drain in the vehicle,but as it holds a small amount of coolant I would only remove if system was filthy.

So, this weekend is pencilled in for this - regarding flushing the block I assume if I put the hose in the header tank and let that flush through that'll do it ? Should also clear the c*** out the system too ?

I flushed the block through from the heater pipes and let it run out the bottom of the water pump pipe.

That's kinda what I'm thinking - hose in header tank, bottom hose off rad and let it run through with the engine running ?

Don't need the engine running and hose in header tank will just flush the header and the hose - just undo a heater hose and flush the engine top to bottom.
I don't know about running the engine tbh, I reckon not tho

Also the rubber hoses where they enter the head are the perfect size to fit a hose in nicely
