my wife got back yesterday from a cross canada round trip(vancouver island to new brunswick and back)13500 klm.took her 11 days driving
tell you the truth i was worried about break downs.no parts available in canada
freelander ran flawlessly not consuming coolant nor oil.
i converted this car from a kv6 auto to a td4 auto a year and a half ago.brought the engine in from the uk.
in the year and a half it has done 65000 klm.i have replaced #1 injector and boost solenoid.
just an amazing little engine.we were never made available diesel land rovers here in canada.
i can see why now it would have kicked the s**t out of domestic sales in similar class

Yours must be the Freelander diesel conversion that was on Craigslist a couple of months ago.
Pretty impressive conversion considering how far away you from parts sources and certainly impressive results!
I take it your KV6 packed it in?
 
That's a bloody long journey! I've had enough after 600kms in a day - and I need plenty of coffee stops during the day, and at least a week's holiday before the return trip!

It is known even here in Ontario that someone in BC di the conversion. Amazing! dare I ask how many hours it took? Do you keep any parts at home just in case?
 
we had it for sale in order to buy a smart car.wife commutes 800klm /week.she wanted something that used less fuel
will keep freelander now.its proved its worth.
the kv6 that was in it ran well enough but had that typical top end rattle..
have to do an oil change this weekend though.

500 Miles a week in a Smart Car. No thanks.
I'll take the Freelander any day. Even if it does cost a bit more to run.
The Smart isn't as fuel efficient as would appear and I definitely wouldn't want to be in an accident in one.
Glad the Freelander is working out OK.
 
I had a smart (all 6'4" of me haha) and it was a brilliant car in the city.

Good god it was awful on the motorway though. It was remapped and had loads of goodies on it so it went really well but it just got blown all over the road on the motorway. Hilarious with the wee dump valve though.. bbbwaaapppp TTOOOSSSHHH hahaha fond memories that brings back!

It only did about 40mpg. Probably not far off what the freelander does.

Id be happy to crash in a smart though, they are extremely tough wee beasties. I say happy... of course id rather not crash, but i wouldnt be put off one thinking they were unsafe.

A work colleague has a smart car, the sporty one, he loves it, however complains about fuel economy and that he has to put expensive gogo juice in it.
i think for the size and weight of the Td4 it is quite efficient.
 
Over here in Canada we have a lot of pick-up trucks on the highway, and they tend to be very aggressively driven. (Generally by bulletproof young guys.)
Even the Freelander feels small on the highway when mixing it up with them. It's not a lot of fun to look in the rearview and see "FORD"
I wouldn't want to deal with that in a Smart. In the city they may be OK but not at 120kmh on the highway.
 
Brett, Would you be interested in selling your old VR6?
I wouldn't mind having a spare and am even toying with the idea of stuffing one in my MGF as a retirement project.
A KV6 in the MGF is a nice project and something that I've been thinking about for some time. I have a rebuild KV6 talking up space in my workshop, ready to fit. Sadly my MGF isn't ready to have the KV6 fitted just yet.
I know a turbo conversion would make more BHP, but the KV6 has a nice torque spread and an awesome sound track.
One day, I'll get the project underway.
