Cant comment expressely on the Auto-Q, as to when it was definatively introduced, but I believe that the 'official' NAS was launched in the early 90's, after demand for the Disco re-awakened American interest in them,. it MAY have been earlier; have a feeling it was short lived and they dropped it for a year or two as the Yanks tightened up the Construction regs..... then re-launched it.
Immeterial; tho' pretty sure they offered the Auto in the 90 & 110 before they bacame Defenders, not for UK models but as an option on some exports, particularly those going to the middle-east; and as said; 'Special Vehicles' would built to customer spec from catalogue parts.
I live just a few miles down the road from Lode-Lane; and often spot 'Factory' cars shuttling about, either doing some road miles, or just shuffling between Solihul, Browns Lane or Gaydon, easy to spot, they are usually on trade plates, and are frequently Left Hand Drive!
As advice though; auto-conversion isn't too difficult using Rangie bits, but not something that would be 'cheap' paying mechanics rates to do it; possibly a bit cheaper than hanging out to get 'genuine' factory auto; but well, there are a few enthusiast built non factory auto90's out there, if you're prepared to take the risk on one.
Failing that; 'Clutch Servo' or buy a Rangie / Disco I'm afraid!
