I am considering looking at a P38 its the only one that I can find locally that hasn't got an O ring leak.

It was described as "suspension has been bypassed with a warning light on the dash". I am assuming that it has been fitted with bypass valves and thererefore the air bags are functioning (correct me if I am wrong).

I know that I have not provided much information, but that's all the detail I have, but I don't want to go on a 100 mile round trip for nothing. I am prepared to do the work myself so it would be just parts

Is it easy to return to a working EAS and what is the rough costs for the main components?
Will it need to go on diagnositcs to reset?
Would the problem be limited to either compressor, valve block or could it be something else?
Plus if I do go to look at it is there anything else around the suspension that I should check for?

Cheers in advance.

It will almost certainly be on springs. Cost to put it back on air will depend on how much of the system is still there and the condition. I'd sooner have one with leaking O rings.

Thanks for such a quick response. I specifically asked and was assured that it is still on air suspension.

You could stick your location into your details then offer appropriate bribes for someone who knows what they're talking about to have a look at it.
I know that chocolate hob nobs aren't cheap but it might save you a bit of grief later.

O rings are diy-able but a pain to do (I did mine last year). However they don't cost much at all. Fixing the air suspension could cost hundreds. To be honest if the O rings haven't been done then it's only a matter of time till they need doing anyway.

Thanks for the help guys. I went to have a look at it anyhow as it would help tme o gain experience of diesel Rangies. The end result was that it was worse than described.

It was a 99 with 167K on the clock. Apart from the bypass which had the car level warning light on the console and the "no more than 35mph" warning. It had an airbag warning light, the tailgate was slightly crunchy at the bottom and rusty around both the points where the tail support connect to the body.

Finally to cap it off I finally noticed that the back light for the heater console was not working so had a good look and saw that the open book error was showing.

As per a Sun reporter I made my excuses and left.

Keep looking, there are some decent ones out there. It's frustrating however as they are cheap cars and it's a right a pain in the arse travelling to look at something described as nice but turns out to be a shed. Just wish people were more honest and it would save us all a heap of time!

On a similar topic, I have a 99 plate 4.6 that has been converted at some time to springs. All of the components appear to be still in the car, with jumpers disconnected in the EAS box to disable it. I am thinking of going back to Air, without buying the bags, is there any way to test that the compressor and valves etc still work???

Look at Wammers guide in the "How To" section.

Thanks for the heads up on this. The link from there to Welcome to RSW Solutions was also a bonus.

Since reading the articles, I have now realized that the system isn't all in tact. As well as taking the bags out, the genius who converted to springs also ripped out the height sensors. Looking at the prices online, it looks like it is going to turn into quite an expensive job.

Does anybody know if there are any cheaper alternatives to the p38 sensors or where there is a good source for them please?

Thanks again for the advice so far.

You can only use the correct sensors. You could try Britpart, Island 4 x 4 Bearmach etc, prices vary. You could also try Emmotts our sponsor and risk some second hand ones.
