Confused over road tax

Hi folks

I`ve been searching for fookin ages, and I can`t seem to find an explanation as to what road tax is paid depending on year.:confused:
I`ve seen that the new ones cost a shed load to tax, but is there a date where its cheaper? By which I mean post free road tax, IE 1980s 90s etc
I thought I had seen that pre G (?) reg is @ £210...............
And that `vans` rather than station wagons (I`m more interested in the county 90s) are cheaper to tax
Can someone explain to a newbie what is paid depending on the year
I have a couple of classic cars and bike, and am now lucky enough to be pre road tax and MOT now, I`m not used to these new fangled charges:D

But if I`m only shopping at the moment, a years difference could mean a few quid extra on road tax

By van, do you mean panel 90 or 110 as oppsed to station wagon?
What year is it?

So panels are classed as commercials?
So what's with the pre G reg thing?
I'm prob going to be looking at late 1990's, maybe early 2000's

Taxing my 1999 transit diesel today £220.That is usually the same as my 1999 TD5 Disco £220.......... Don't make sense last night on TV big bang.They did tests and showed that as we all know that diesel engines throw out more crap than petrol !!!!!!!! So why are diesel cars cheaper to tax than petrol. ??????

Because at that time it was done on engine size, not emissions...
 
they still are though (in most cases)
Deisels may throw out more crap, but its only the Co2/km that the governement take into acount, on this front, deisels are more efficient

I've just sold a Transit, and that was @ £215.
Yet I've got a Citroen Crosser, and I don't think its a deal more.
Can't remember where I read the pre G reg thingy.

There is no pre-G thing. Once upon a time vehicles over 25 were VED exempt, that was squashed by Labour because they realised too many cars were going to qualify, so it was limited to 1973. I recall reading it has recently been reintroduced (or due to be in the near future), but it is somewhere in the region of 30 years old now.

Vehicles registered before 1 March 2001 use the engine size tax system. Those on or after use CO2 based tax system.

VED went up with inflation (excluding HGVs). It is now £225. VED is going to be inflation matched for the foreseeable future. That way the guy holding the red handbag doesn't have to take the abuse for the VED increase as it is never announced, just happens.
 
The tax exempt year has been move to the 1st of jan 74, so anything built before that date is now included, bad luck for my brothers Stag which is a 76 lol
