Hi - I've just joined the forum so that I be around like minded Disco lovers plus I need some advice from someone more experienced than me. I've had a 97 disco for 3 years and it's been fab, I've had loads of fun in it but recently decided to upgrade to something that smells less like a farm yard and doesn't leak so much. Fed up of having to scrape the inside of the windows as well as the outside! I've been to look at an 04 landmark discovery but the gear box if confusing me. My 97 has diff lock which I use in light snow and ice but the landmark only has high and low range. I looked in the manual and it explains how to get diff lox (push gear lever left when in H or L) but it doesn't feel like there's a gate there. Have they done away with the option of manually selecting diff lock? If so, why does the manual still give instructions to select it and what do I use on slippery surfaces instead? Any help would be appreciated xxx

Thanks, The transfer case shifter just has 3 positions (H, L, and N) instead of 5 so wasn't sure if the diff lock had been removed or just faulty. Picture below shows the gear lever with only the H and L in the landmark and not the 'figure 8' one I have in my 97 disco. Very confusing for a novice like me!

It does have hill decent buttons, abs etc that I don't have in the 97 but why does the manuel still tell you that you can select diff lock?????

To confuse you even more ...

Some Discos had your internal fittings, suggesting there's no centre difflock, but the box might have the cd in! Just no linkages or lever to work it .. ;)

If you were very lucky, you got HDC and TC with a CDL too .. almost unstoppable!!

Thanks Paul D, don't think I'm that lucky but will have a closer look. Think I'm gonna go for the landmark I saw over the weekend but going to miss my old rot box. Shame I can't keep both. By the way, your local to me, any idea if they still do off roading at Hundall wood near Chesterfield?

Dunno .. but if that's Black Hills then they stopped it! Local objections I believe ..

Well I've picked up my new 2004 disco today and it's clean, no draughts or overwhelming smell of dog. It's pulls into traffic without time to celebrate a birthday before anything happens. There's no rust or waxoil to be seen and the leather seats are comfy. The turning circle is no longer an artic circle and the tape cassette player is no more. *SIGH* I miss my old rot box. I feel like I've just driven an unwanted puppy into the wilderness and left it there ......

I think the early d2s had the diff lock lever removed and tc was the preferred option. The facelift models got it back again I believe due to popular demand. This is hearsay mind.

I had a landmark and it was a beautiful motor. Enjoy:)

Thanks Kato, I'm going to read through the manual tonight and see if I can fatham the new buttons and gizmos I've got instead of the diff lock. Snow due Friday so will have chance for a play woo hoo! It is lovely but still miss the rufty tufty old beast. Still - change is good otherwise we would still be living in caves and painting pictures of cows on the walls!
