confused about oil

this is true, however, it is well documented that their diesel v6s (in audi a4s etc) go tits up with cam wear on the extended services 'as recommended by vw' even using the correct vw spec oil, whereas owners who had done shorter servicing didn't. Personally, i use vw507 and still change it every 6k or a year, whichever comes first in my van, whereas i changed the computer service schedule in my golf (pd130) to short service instead of extended and still used vw507. A lot of people in the vw world think the long service schedules in diesels are wrong and merely a marketing ploy. The 1.9 is an amazing engine, but still needs regular oil changes of the highest quality. I always buy the trade packs at my local motorfactors and it's usually quite cheaper as it has less fancy packaging despite being exactly the same as the stuff on the front shelves. I always go by the acea number and vw/bmw etc rating.

+1:)

well I have decided not to put in the 10/40 semi synthetic oil I am going for the 5/30 semi I went to landrover today and they said not to use it ,it was fine on my old freelander, but apparently then now use the 5/30 in the later ones so after much ado I am going that way . But thanks for all your comments

Hi guys - seems like there are many opinions here

let me add my tuppence worth ...............

I just looked in Rave and it says that the 2 litre diesel engine (Td4) should use 10W40 or 15W40 oil meeting ACEA A3 and B3 specifications.

On the other hand i use 5W30 (BMW LL-01 spec) in our BMW 320d which has the same engine ...........

Any thoughts ?

OH - happy new year to fellow FL owners and anybody else who is reading :)

Thin oils are used to keep fuel consumption figures low or help the starter in very cold climates. As an engine wears the bearing clearances increase, this means a thicker oil is better as it reduces the chances of metal to metal contact.
IMHO thin oils in old or higher milage engines do more long term harm than good.

Just read further in RAVE - seems any of the "recommended" oils can be used in the Td4 engine.......................

By the way - i was looking for the diesel fuel filter in my Td4 (FL1) - thought it was located at the rear right of the engine bay when standing in front of the car but cant find it !!!

is it always there or did LR hide it away somewhere else on some models ??

thanks

Only the early model had it in the engine bay , It's behind the rear left wheel arch ?

I think the best compromise on oil for the TD4 would be to use 5w-40 fully synthetic .
The 5w is good for cold starts , The 40 will be thicker for my 75,000 mile engine & will also please the 10w-40 users , All that topped off with the latest fully synthetic oil technology :biggrin1:

+1 from me.

In my opinion, putting fully synthetic into an engine that has done a good few miles, especially if the previous oil change history is unknown regarding the type of oil used is both a waste of time and money. Some engines are designed to run with semi synthetic and using fully synthetic will not make any difference in improving the reliability. It's supposed to give increased mileage between oil changes (Up to 12000 miles) and corresponding reduction in annual service costs.
What is more important, especially with diesel engines....just look at the state of the oil drained...is regular oil & filter changes to keep those oil ways clean. I have always changed the oil/filter in every car I have owned at a maximum of 6000 miles-if had done short runs, every 3000. The air filter I change every other oil change (12000) miles.
To me, using a full synthetic where semi synthetic or even a mineral multigrade is specified is akin to trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear and a complete waste of time and money:eek:

lets see if you get 300,000 miles out of that then. 75,000 on a diesel is nothing not even broke in

@3000 miles a year that would take me 75 years to do that mileage :D
I think the body will rot away way before that or the transmission will blow up !!

Hey DTO

Sorry to come back to this question but i looked for my diesel filter this afternoon.

1) I confirmed that it is NOT in the engine bay. The 2 fuel lines go to the HP pump / fuel cooler connections only

2) Under the car the 2 lines run along the side of the left hand longitudinal chassis beam and then disappear up over the fuel tank somewhere.

Could it be that my FL1 has no fuel filter ??

Or could the filter be integrated with the in tank pump ??
However having seen that to get to the in tank pump it is necessary to remove the subframe i would be surprised if even LR were crazy enough to put the filter in there !!!!!!!

Does anybody have an idea ?

thanks

Mine is an early one with the fuel filter in engine bay .

I got it slightly wrong as it's under the right drivers side rear wheel arch !

TD4 fuel filter.AVI - YouTube

A goggle search will bring up loads of pictures & you tube video's about it ;)

I've got Rave and have found it ok until this filter story

Managed a clutch change with rave too

Hope to find time next week to look for the filter

Incidentally - looked at the pollen filter yesterday - I've never seen anything so dirty in my life

Service time is coming up

Thanks
