Hi all, Im new to this forum so please be gentle...
At the moment i have a Nissan Navara double cab pickup 2005
Im now looking to change this and really fancy a defender

I have been looking at vehicles upto the value of 12k....
So my question which one.....now i know that all vehicles have there pros and cons

What are the main things to look out for when buying one

Thanks in advance

Reckon you'll miss the space going from a Navara DC to a 90, they're really useless for carrying people and stuff. Either or it's ok, but there's no room for both! 110 is a much better bet, either double-cab or station wagon.

Things to look out for. Well, this isn't a bad place to start:

Defender Buyers Guide | Repair My Landrover

At your price bracket serious rust and structural corrosion shouldn't be an issue, but there are still plenty of things to be aware of. Just remember that with Defenders it's all about the condition. Not the mileage or to a degree not even the age.

Thanks for the quick replies....I can see that some members are help than others:)
The Nav i have hardly ever gets used and with only 36,000 on the clock.
My missus wont drive it and its sometimes too big to take anywhere.

I have a 306 diesel what i use for work so the nav is just a weekend toy that doesnt get used.
If i bought say a 2005 110 what engine would be in it cos ive seen people on about 200tdi and 300td and so on,.... really confused at the moment

It'll be a TD5.

Is the td5 engine ok.....Ive heard that the engine out of the transit isnt that good ....

and why buy a golf

Landrover are a bit like the microsoft of the car world. New models always run badly with loads of glitches, but they iron them out as they go along. so by the time they get ready top replace with a new model they've finally produced something that works well. then they start again. so the later the model you get the better it is..

So when was the td5 engine first put into production

Ok thanks for taking the time to reply.. Im a clued up a little better now.
Are there any major issues with rest of vehicle that i should be aware of
i.e. gearbox drivetrain etc

Just one more question then il leave you alone....what sort of mileage could i expect for this td5 engine....i know the is dependant on tyre choice but a ballpark figure

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Td5 do over 250k without issues. Might need a few replacement parts by then but the main block should be good if looked after. That's the key, looking after it. There are many 200Tdis and 300Tdis well over the 300k marks, again with good servicing they will go on for years. I have two 200Tdis that have done 167k and 193k respectively and they both seem in good health.

Personally, I'd be looking for a late Td5 in your position. I'm not a fan of the later dash setup (though it offers far superior heating/cooling performance), and the new engine is still a little 'new' for me. The Td5 is well proven as being reliable, despite the concerns that were raised when it was released (ie. the "noooo electrics..." nonsense).

The 200Tdi was fitted from 1990 to 1993 and the 300Tdi from 1994 to 1998. Td5 from then until 2007 and from then until now it's been the Tdci (Puma). Personally I think the Td5 is the best bet, the Tdis are nice but they're a bit agricultural and haven't really got the oomph to get a loaded or towing 110 up to highway speeds! That said, they're simple and easy to work on...and bits are cheap. The price you pay for refinement on the newer engines :)

If I didn't already have a nice Mazda engine to go in my 110 I would put a Td5 in it. I'm happy with the 200Tdi in my 90, but it didn't have enough power for the usage my 110 got.

Ok thanks for replies.....
Gonna search for a 110 on at least an 04 plate as this seems the way to go.
Im on a tight budget so il see what i can find

Can let you have a 15 page MS Word guide of things to look out for if you pm me an email address - file too big to post on the forum.

Will give you a good grounding in things to be aware of

EDIT - guide now linked - see Post 22
