Well my Dad maybe buying a computer..............if he ever gets back from Italy!!

I am not to good with these things so don't know what one to tell him to get.
He won't spend a lot of money..............he's too tight :D

So what would be the best to go for. We get paperwork for Dell all the time, but i have no idea whaich would be the best one for us.

Lap Top or PC?

I will use it to compile and print the catalogues for the nursery and do some basic accounting and letter writting. And of course accessing the net.
NTL seem to be the service provider in my road, well that's what my neighbours have. We have a BT phoneline at home thou.

Thanks,
Maria.

OK, I may be biased here as i have a lot of dealings with Dell on their Workstation products, but for what you are looking for they should be fine for light home use. Beware of Dell low end models however, as they are engineered down to a price (as are all low end PC's) and do not come with a floppy disk drive which can send Sage into a hissy fit when it tries to do a backup...

Laptops mean you pay more money for the same spec as a desktop machine, and is generally slower (due to extra low voltage requirements making the same item run slower in a laptop than a desktop).

Basically, the higher the speed number, the bigger the number when it comes to memory size for the money is the best buy. Check out HP Pavilion budget machines to compare with the Dell Dimension. DO NOT buy a Packard-Bell or anything from PC world. If you must have a laptop, Costco had quite a good deal on Sony Vaio laptops last time I was in...

Hmmm ok. I think I will bring the Dell leaflet in when I come back after the holidays and you guys can tell me what I need.
I've never brought one before!

you want a desktop, they have bigger memories, you want minimum 150gig, latest pentium processor, cd rw, dvd rw, sound card, dont be swayed by the cheapest, look into the back up, i have hp as i think their support is better than most, but i guarantee you someone will argue. acer is another make that has good support. i am not sure about dell as i have never had anything to do woth them.

get a dell desktop. cheap and good warranty delivery etc..
a lappy is a waste of space unless u really need the mobility and i mean really need.
the basic desktop should be good enough for your requirements.
todays price, 329 quid inc a tft monitor. buy online with a CC.

i build and repair em.
theres no way i can build a desktop with a tft monitor for that sort of money.
well there is, but no profit in it.

I'm with Ormus on this one. Unless you've a real specific application (like my music/recording computers) or you're asking a lot of it from a graphics/gaming angle, you can't go far wrong with a Dell desktop. I've one of their laptops too & it's a bit clunky, but it does the job OK.

They're cheap, they deliver bluddy quickly & their supoport is fairly good (so I've heard though I've not needed it meself).

Summat's 'appened to the World... Yeller 'as started mekin sense!
