Hi all,

Well, on my way home to Fareham last night, the D2 (2004 TD5 Landmark) decided to dump 9l of ATF onto the A303 near Wincanton. I didn't fully realise what was happening, doing 60mph it seemed to drop out of lockup, then the revs went up and down. It's only when I noticed the rear window dripping in oil :eek:I realised what had happened. I staggered to a layby, there was oil everywhere, mostly on the LH side, so a burst cooler pipe was the likely cause.

Anyway, finally got recovered at 8am :eek::eek::eek: and home. Wifey not impressed. The rubber pipe had come away from the connector. I've made a temporary fix with a couple of jubilee clips as I've got to get the car mobile, just for a short distance.

The question, has anyone used Comma MVATF Plus Fully Synthetic? The spec seems to say it's compatible with Dexron II, Dexron III and loads of other things, but the Halfrauds and Opie Oil oil selectors don't say it's compatible. It's the only oil I can get in that sort of quantity quickly and I've got to get the car into the drive.

I'm grateful for your wisdom!
 
Seems compatible with early Jaguars and those were fitted with ZF4hp22 box... seing it's specs i'd use it myself without fear if i had an auto

I'd get a garden sprayer if you haven't already got one, it makes filling the flipping box much easier.

I've got one in each country since mine leaked so much for such a long while!
Just remove the end two bits, i.e. the jet thingy!

Don't know about ATF but most likely yes. It's been 2 years since I used it for the power steering which ran dry due to a sudden HP pipe rapture and no issues so far. I didn't even have to change the pump.

0k, I wouldn’t as early Jag ZF auto gear boxes like the early Discovery’s ZF gearboxes were designed with the use on mineral not fully synthetic ATF
I remember that someone did a fluid change using fully synthetic in their RR with ZF gearbox then had a load of issues with selection, the reason they were told was the synthetic fluid was too slippery. All that was reported in an early LRO magazine so before forums,

Not that I took much notice then as my 1987 RR would be serviced by a main dealer, but I expect asking a auto gearbox repairer the above question for definitive answer would be helpful for those that are interested.

I meant those early Jags which have the same box like the D2's cos that's what we are speaking about here, and as long as that oil is an alternative for the recommended Dexron III i'd put it in my D2's autobox if i had one without fear, that's all i'm saying not that i recommend it for others https://www.ashwoodjagparts.co.uk/p...lly-synthetic-automatic-transmission-fluid-1l
 
Many thanks. I picked up 10l this morning. We'll see what happens, but I must get the car off the road into the drive as it's causing a bit of an obstruction. Hopefully I haven't damaged the 'box. Then to repair the pipe properly, they seem to be crazily expensive and non genuine, or not obtainable. LR list them as "NLA". And it always seems to be the left one that fails.

This maybe helpful if it’s the oil cooler pipe that has an issue, but it also applies to any similar hydraulic pipe.

Just refilled the box, surprised it only took 5l, but I didn't drain it, so maybe a litre or 2 was still in there below the pickup. Went through the filling procedure as per the WSM. All seems fine, only took it gently for a few hundred yards, didn't want the other end of the rubber pipe to pop off as that's loose too, but it seemed exactly as before, no delay going into gear and changed 1st to 2nd normally. It's now back in the drive, so the neighbours are friendly again:D

Now to get all the oil out of the brakes.....:eek:
