what difference do you think there is between ashcroft rebuild and dealer supplied one or another
I would be happier if I had an auto fitted by an independent as opposed to main dealer. I would be looking for an independent who had done the recon themselves and were known for it. Hence they would have made mistakes in the past only to find them themselves, rather than just changing the auto like a main dealer would. I think the link between the recon'er and fitter is important.

Ashcrofts reputation is pretty good from everything I've seen & read. Makes me wish I'd just paid to have a recon box fitted on my last Freelander rather than selling it off cheap to save the hassle. Oh well, you live & learn.

I got a free DVD last year when I subscribed to land rover monthly. A 4x4 is born. Quite a big section on the DVD with Dave Ashcroft showing the refurb of a rangie gearbox. Interesting stuff. Workshop looks like an aladins cave of bits.

Now to start looking for one, if anyone wants to swap a TD4 auto for a merc c230 estate auto let me know :)

I agree with that completely. I looked into financing a disco or maybe a Freelander 2 and the prices just don't warrant it for me. The old Freelander did me well, it's only since chopping and changing cars I realise how much I liked it.

That's a nice looking car epicuser - still not sure to get pre or post facelift. Will depend on condition of the car all round I guess.

That was my reasoning too.

I had been considering upgrading to a Disco II no older than my 04 Hippo. Looking about online and then visiting various sellers I couldn't see one cheaper than £8000 in as good condition and high spec as mine. Then dealers were offering me a paltry £3000 for mine due to it's mileage alone, one even said he couldn't sell Freelanders and offered £1500!!! Bloody cheek!

I knew my car and it's issues and worked out that having already replaced the engine and gearbox it would cost about £1200 more to change the VCU and have a brand new sunroof fitted. 5 x Pirelli's @ £122 each later, I KNOW I have a car in much better condition than many younger models.

Motorway driving is very smooth, daily driving is nippy. I'm a happy chap :D

I'm the same. The wife wanted a disco or a Freelander 2. I just can't warrant the spend or the repayments. We both work from home so the car is really only used for leisure. the part ex offers are abysmal and the cost of the new breed of 'Posh Landys' is a bit ridiculous. What happened to all the entry level models.

Besides I'd be scared to death of getting my hands dirty with a £40k car. Leave them to the footballers. I'll take a TD4 & a haynes manual.
