clutch

hi all
when i put a new clutch in my td4 i noticed there was about 20 mm of play in my fly wheel i no they have a bit of give in them but how much play should they have in them it was as blue as hell so i replaced it cost me £300 but hell i was in there . im new to all this duel mass **** and i wonder if i made a good call
i hope i did as i sold the car to my sister but it would not fit in her barrat house so i have it back im no looking forward to lots of miles at normal revs lol

although it was £300, how long did it take you to get to the point you could change it?

You were in there anyway, so it was a good call. If you had to take it all apart again to change it at a later date, it's a nightmare, because the job is a pain, and not only would you have to do it again, the whole time you'd be going "I wish I'd changed it when I had it all apart"

Whenever I dismantle anything, car, van, or any equipment at work, I always ask myself what else might need replacing while it's all apart.

To my mind, you did the right thing. Something less to worry about, if nothing else.

i did the hole job in a weekend in a mate of a mates garage with a lift and some really nice tools i dont think you could do this job lying on your back,i did not rush with lots of tea and fag stops and a lot of time looking at the book.
the parts came in at clutch kit £127 flywheel £300 cyl/bearing £50 ird hose £8 ird gearbox diff oil and seals £28 i was going to replace the turbo as the ird was out but i got cleaned out with having to get the new flywheel however the vac hose was shot so when i put a new one on no more power loss runs like a dream.
the only thing i dont like is there is very little travel in the clutch pedal there must be a art in bleeding the clutch and i have not masterd it someone said jam the pedal down overnight with a stick and this will force any traped air out of the system but i dont fancy all that force on the preshure plate overnight has anyone tryd this???

an easy option for this is to run it into any half decent garage and ask them to pressure bleed it,ive done this a few times and have only had to give a couple of quid and only takes 5 mins....

ye thats the way to go i will see if i can sort it out for next week

just a quick thought that i have had if there is no bleed nipple on the system can you still bleed it with the preshure bleeding gadget ???????

yes mate,they bleed it by attaching to the brake master cylinder (filler cap)...hth
