So I have been taking the gearbox apart of our S2a - took out the Clutch release mechanism and noticed there was no spring in the cross shaft. I assumed that there should be one... although not sure what is does!
I have bouts the spring but for the devil of me I have no idea how (or even whether) it fits! It can't go side by side the fork and thrust washer - its just too tight... and its a struggle to get the spring into the fork. If I could get it in I doubt it would do much use in there.

Any ideas on what to do? Thanks.

Thanks Lynall for looking this up. The spring is quite long - you can get it into the fork with a struggle... but I can't see - with it so compressed in there - what its purpose can be apart from getting in the way of the shaft! It can't act as a spring back (or forward) mechanism.

That makes sense tottot - can’t believe it needs to be such a long spring but I’ll thread the spring back into the tube of the clutch fork with a small end showing that acts to stop any fork rattle
Thanks!

These snips from series 2 manual show its location.
