I decided to change the clutch slave cylinder yesterday, within half an hour the slave unit was off and ready for the replacement to be fitted. As I tried to pull the rubber push rod seal from the rod the rod itself came detatched from the cluth arm. There is a small plastic clip that slideds on the rod that has 2 prongs which locate round the clutch that prevent the ball on the rod from dislodging out of the socket on the clutch arm. I can't seem to be able to attach it back on - Is there a way of doing this easily or have I caused a recovery to the garage?

Any help appreciated

It can be done because it happened to me; I then got it back on with the help of a good light source, and some prodding tools.

However, after all that I had to take the engine out and put in a whole new clutch system as it turned out to be the big round clutch cover torsion spring had snapped.

Tis an arse of a job, I had three spare clips as the lugs seem to be made of cheese and snap easily, I managed it with plenty of swearing, but ended up having to get a garage to sort it as the release arm somehow dropped off the pivot!!! There is a thread on another landrover forum, I can't remember what one, where a chap used a length of tube and some fishing line to pull the lugs in whilst holding it in place.

If yer do a search on here I posted summat about making a spring an bending a pair of pliers to insert the spring an it made a bettererer job of it, but the long an the short is it's a reeeeeet tw@ of a job but can be done.

Thanks very much for all your helpful information.
Managed it in the end with a piece of wire and alot of patience.
All back together now, plenty of pressure on the clutch pedal but still cant find any gears so it looks like its off to the garage :(

are you sure the fork hasn't come off the ball in the bell housing? OR worn its way through.

When you say pedal pressure, do you mean its stiff to move, or it feels like it should?
Try putting your transfer box into neutral, then selecting a gear, then engaging the transfer box. If that won't engage, then the clutch is probably seized. There are however a handful of ways to release it, somewhere on here...

I cannot engage any gears whilst the engine is running, however if i switch the engine off, put the transfer box in neutral and engage first gear when i start the engine i can still select high or low. The clutch then works as normal but then have to turn the engine off to take it out of first.

Hmm. It sounds like your clutch is dragging.

Have you bled the system properly?

Try this: Switch off the engine, select 1st High.
Put the clutch down, and hold it there, and then start the engine. Then, with the handbrake on hard, try to pull away hard, so that the clutch is dragging quite heavily - see if it feels right, this may just run the clutch enough to make it work again - if the clutch has stuck on a bit, or the fly wheel has gone a bit rusty for some unknown reason, etc, this may just polish it up enough to alllow it to work properly. Worked for me when i put a different engine in mine with a slightly rusty flywheel.

Have just done what you said and can now just about find all the gears whilst the engine is running. It is a bit crunchy trying to find first, forth and reverse.
Do you think it needs a bit more bleeding?
