Noticed that my clutch pedal developed a lot of free play then today lost the pedal completely so drove home and had checked the fluid level which was empty. Pulled out the slave and found the piston was hanging out and the actuator rod was right inside the bell housing, and has now disappeared inside completely. I'm thinking that the clutch fork has collapsed.
Next question is what is the best way to sort it, remove the engine or gearbox, its a 90 pick up with the original 19j engine if it makes any difference.

Personal preference some like removing gearbox I prefer to remove the engine, similar happened to me last week, turned out the clutch fork had gone. Working on my own it took about a day, didn't completely remove the engine managed to get away with pulling it forward a bit

Been thinking about it and I'm probably going to remove the engine as i was thinking of doing the cam belt at some point so will be easier with the lump out. What are the bell housing bolts like to get at, is it a case of taking the engine mounts off and dropping the engine down to get at them. Any other tips appreciated cheers

Take out floor and gear tunnel panels is normal route to bell housing bolts.I would do cam belt when motor is back in but before rad,fan ect are replaced.

I think that the general consensus is that the timing belt is easier to do with the engine in, in case you need to use the starter motor to get the big bolt off and it's much easier to take the floor and tranny tunnel off to get at the bolts, easier for getting it back in to.

Might want to do the rear oil seal while its accessible to

I would personally do the cambelt with the engine out. Undo the large bolt on the crank pulley before removing the engine and work in comfort with the engine on the floor.
