Hi there I have a TD4 freelander which has just had a new clutch/slave/master cylinder fitted, At a so called garage and the car now has bitting point on the floor & cannot get gears propeley The garage has now said they cant do anymore My friend said its sounds like air in the system but bled it today & is still no diferent. Has anyone had this problem before? can anyone give me some ideas please as im losing patiants as its been of the road for 3 weeks now. John
 
How many miles have you done on the new clutch? It takes a couple of hundred miles to bed in and mate to the surfaces properly. I had mine done by a really good guy and it was almost on the floor after but soon built up - now its perfect.

I don't know how you bled the clutch but it has such a small reservoir it would be easy to let it get too low and draw air again. I took the bleed nipple out once and put plumbers white tape on the threads - this provides a better seal and stops air bring drawn up. I then used a vacuum bleeder and sucked the fluid out - using a large syringe to put fresh fluid back.
 
How did you drive it home from the garage? Is it possible that you may have got an air lock in it if you have bled it - I would get a large syringe and some rubber pipe to fit the nozzle.

I would suck out of the main reservoir as much fluid as is there and then with a syringe full of fresh new fluid squirt it up through the bleed nipple ( released of course) there by back bleeding - the reservoir will fill up - close nipple and try that - making sure you put the lid on the reservoir - its sealed.

All this is a fiddle and best done with some help.
 
I have back bled already but i didn't have cap on, Would that make a diffrence?

That's fine the cap should be off while back bleeding just remember to put it back on before testing the brakes.

Ok so either the garage has messed up or you've opened the nipple too much and there is no ptfe tape on the threads - so you could be introducing air into the system. Failing that your master cylinder could have gone.

What is the position with the garage - if it wasn't right when you took the car they should be able to advise.
 
johnpowercell , for your information [ if it helps] My td4 had a new clutch and slave/master cylinder not because the clutch had worn out but cos the slave was leaking but had the lot done while the box was off. When i picked up the td4 the clutch was very poor , biting point was in the carpet and you had to change gear with care and slowly, i too asked the mechanic about this and he said give it 2 weeks and you will see it will be fine and sure enough over the next few days it did improve and the bite point got higher and clutch had more guts to it .All i can say is give it time but if you are not satisfied take other action.
