clutch presure buggering off in reverse

right i'll expect the grief first then any help would be grateful plenty of presure on clutch taking of forwards and selecting up and down the box plenty of fluid flow through the system, but the presure then buggers of when i select reverse but then comes back a few minutes later so i thought i'd see if anybody else has had this problem. by the way 1988 range rover classic modify'd v8 and gearbox is a lt 85 manuel 5 speed

so your saying master or slave cyclinder or both but just to clarify it will hold presure all day long in first or second whether it be low or high or locked, go for reverse gear the presure buggers of stop vehicle wait a couple of minutes it comes back to pedal.

okay i get your drift. start range rover press clutch pedal to floor select reverse gear. release clutch pedal to biteing point it will reverse for about 10 yards before clutch pedal drops flat to floor. it does not do the same whilst going forwards or pulling off. you can also hold the range rover on the biteing point all day long in 1st gear. it might not make sense but this is what happens.

selecting reverse cant have an effect on the clutch pedal ,a failure in the master cylinder seal or slave could and be position sensitive , reverse could easily be harder to select than first , but if pedal feels odd change master and slave and check pipe work

thanks james i,ve got new seals for both on order i know that presure is all down to the master & slave cylinder just strange that there's no signs of leakage or fluid loss anywhere i,ve flushed out the fluid several time's this year. just in case the fluid was past its shelf life.

I was out with Dave one day when his clutch was playing up

It's definitely s weird one, I personally can't think of any reason why it would only cause you a problem in reverse!

But honestly James he's not kidding, it's absolutely fine in forward gears but then the damn thing doesn't want to go backwards

I'm not familiar with the LT85 but as you say there's no sense to why it's doing what it is

The slave went funny on mine and it leaked, a mate has a td5 90 and the clutch pedal went to the floor every now and again, was the master cylinder at fault it eventually turned out

But I think all you can do Dave is replace the easiest item first and see how it is!

how do you mean wont go backwards ?clutch hydraulics wont effect drive only engagement of gears

lt85 can be prone to jumping out of gear especially if rev idler is badly adjusted so doesnt engage fully or teeth are worn

Only thing I can think of at the moment is that the torque reaction from the propshaft will tilt the gearbox/engine one way when going forward and the other in reverse. Therefore it may be related to the gearbox/engine rocking one way or the other - must admit I cant think why. I assume you have checked gearbox mounts, its securely attached to belhousing and slave cylinder is bolted in tight?

It does seem like it's either taking slightly less clutch disengagement to select a forward gear hence why it goes in smoothly but won't select reverse, it just grinds trying to get it in to reverse!

that is normal ,even with a new clutch and hydraulic system clutch never fully clears there is allways some drag but not enough to cause selection issues, obviously over time drag can increase for a few reasons often more than one reason ie clutch cover and poor hydraulics,and it can become enough to effect selection,reverse will be harder than 1st as its not got a baulk ring but has a sliding idler, if thats the case you need to get clutch to clear more

thanks it could be like you,ve all said as the engine's a modify 4.4 v8 lump that was destine'd for the army to test but it just sat there gathering dust until my uncle retire'd outputing 340bhp the lt 85 was modify too on the gearing so all the power is packed into 1st 2nd 3rd 4th. 5th now just acts a cruising gear at 56. i did have a problem with it destroying clutches every year til i swapped to the panther paddle type clutch. i,ve gotten use'd to it eating slave & master cyclinder once a year. but i,ve got these all on order. to handle the extra power the drive, uj's, diffs, are all uprated too. all the gearbox and engine mounts are have been replaced. this is just the first time its ever reacted like this. when the slave or master have gone before its been quite obivous. but i,ll keep plugging away at it.

might help to mention that in the first place, and 4th gear is the same as any other what was lt85 modification

im interested to know the out come of this

as mentioned above it could be a related to torque reaction of engine and box braceing its self the opposite way in reverse

have you enough slack in your clutch flexi
(thats my wild stab in the dark )

the whole thing was recon'd and regear'd to run on the 235/85's tyres

wouldnt that be the transfer box gearing ,youd have to machine new gears to alter an lt85 as there are only one set of ratios

could be i,ll get hold of my uncle and find out for definate as he took it a an engineering firm in leicester when we was putting the engine in swapping over the props, drive, diffs, and all the terrafirma stuff could be that its all due an over haul as its been ten years of abuse, and thats why i,m getting these issue's

flexi pipe had a very small bulge/ bubble in it like an the egg you some times get on a tire i,ve replace pipe seems to be holding presure now in reverse so thanks to the chap who suggested the flexi pipe won't be buying a brit part one again. only put it in before xmas
