I have a series III SWB. When I let out the clutch there is a clunking type noise. It doesn't do it every time. I have checked the prop shafts and they appear sound. A new gearbox was fitted two years ago and the clutch checked then. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I am currently in Portugal and due to drive it back to Blighty in early July so I don't want to arrive home on the back of a low loader!

Check for backlash in prop U/Js and rear differential also have a waggle on the hand brake drum it sounds like it is taking up some play somewhere. Are gearbox mountings sound?

I played around with the front prop shaft and had a friend looking underneath then let the clutch pedal out - this revealed that the front diff is where the clunking is coming from. LR bits in Portugal are stupid money so I have removed the front prop shaft and will sort out the diff when I get back to England.

Many thanks for the helpful suggestions.
