Clutch bolts help

Started to strip my defender 300tdi engine down ready for rebuild and I cant seem to get anything onto the clutch bolts. I can see there 14mm but do I have to grind down the outer side walls of a socket to get it to fit as it wont go onto the bolts because of the clutch plate.

they are 8mm bolts ,so 13mm spanner size , you will need 3/8ths thin wall socket ,and loosen them all in stages it helps keep what access to bolt heads there is
 
8mm??? not sure what I have been left with then, mind you with the other bodges I've seen so far it wouldnt surprise me if the bolts where wrong.

clutch bolt is an 8mm bolt which has a 13mm head in std form or 10 mm head in flange head form , your bell housing studs are 10mm which means a std nut is 17mm spanner size or 15 in flange form as youve got fitted ,are you sure they are not 13mm socket size

I had allen bolts on my series clutch which were rather handy! May be worth swapping to them for ease in the future ?


Although on the R380 clutch I had what James said 13mm hex head M8's though and the sockets fitted just fine, I used an impact socket too as it was the closest one to hand and it fitted, although it looks like theres less space on that pressure plates for the bolts than mine :p
 
Thats my problem, theres about 1mm between the bolt heads and the clutch so I dont have anything that fits. I dont know how they even got the bolts tight before.
 
I will give it a go with a ground down socket wall and see if I can get it to fit.
If all else fails I have a lump hammer.
 
Tried a spanner and even a brake line spanner but cant get even that on. If I try and use the open end on a spanner it just spins of as the bolts are so tight and lack of grip.

No because the clutch plate tapers out theres no room for it to go on. I did try and tap a spanner onto the bolt and a socket but they just wouldnt go. Next option would be that I weld a new bolt head onto the old ones in the clutch / flywheel and once out fit hex ones as you said before. This is just one of the many problems I've come across on the stripdown, cant wait to see whats next.
 
are you scrapping the clutch and replacing with a new one ?


If so could just get a slitting disc in there, make a cut then bash it in a bit with a hammer and cold chisel to get more room

New clutch fitted 200-300 miles ago but the way its going I may just end up cutting it off as you say.:)
 
Im confused, only did mine a couple of months ago, and a standard Halfords Pro socket fitted absolutly fine, mines also a 300tdi, and was done with the engine still in.
 
Bit out of focus but you can just see three points on the bolt hitting the clutch, so no room for a socket.
