clunking noise when changing gear

hi all.
iv just bought a defender 90, 2011 and when i change gear there is a clunking noise like something is banging underneath, if i change gear slowly and let the clutch up slowly its ok, but when pulling out of a junction or from a roundabout then there is the clunk, anyone any ideas what it could be,

Excessive slack in the drive train "endfloat"

most likely caused by warn Uj's or excessive wear in the Transmission transfer case or diffs

I would check the backlash in the prop I:E how much movement there is before the components mesh

If the clunking noise is coming from the back end it could be the A joint.

thanks chaps, i tried turning the prop, probably a couple of inch twist either way,

and the noise seems to come more from the center really,or more towards the front, but im not overly sure as i try not let it happen, but ill go for a run about later and see if i can pinpoint it.

Prop twist can you see movement in the uj's? There shouldn't really be any slack in them and they can cause the clunking you speak of
If not that try driving with either prop off in difflock see if still have problem, if only problem with one prop on then likely diff if problem with both still maybe something in transfer or shaft that joins to gearbox?

+1, Could be the A frame balljoint, Unless you have a press , just buy the balljoint prefitted in the housing.

I would go with A frame ball joint as a first point of call too.

If it's been on there for years, I wouldn't even bother with a press. If you want to get the old one out,remove arm, heat the arm with a torch, and beat the joint out with a sledgehammer. Nice job on a cold winters evening.

LOL, but then for the cost difference, I would still, having tried to remove my old one from the bracket and failing, buy it prefitted .

sometimes lazyness is the best option....

I am much too mean to pay for a whole arm if I only need the joint.

Bit of gas is cheap, I have a sledgehammer, and the bushes on the top of the A frame often need changing anyway.
