Trying to set tappet gaps on my 2.5 petrol engine, and find that some of the tappets make a loud "clicking" noise and yu can feel the valve "jumping". I havent dismantled it all yet - but am inclined to think the problem lies in the tappet slides/guide/roller area. Has anyone got any experience of this symptom/problem or any resolution?

I reckon we should put it back togevver with the new bits installed - start the fecker and if you can't hear that rattle we were trying to fix we should leave it alone. If it's still rattly, we should take it laning over the summer and fix it this autumn/winter when the lanes are too wet fer driving on ;)
 
is it? cant remember , its been a wile from i done em on a 2.3.
if you have set em , and they still tap , might be worn springs.
clearence should be 0.25 mm or 0.010 in.
there is a kind of system to do it,
set no 1 tappet with no 8 valve fully open,

would i be correct in assuming that no1 tappet is closest to the water pump?
 
you can do them on the 'rock' that way you dint gotta turn the injun as much

you can also do them with the engine running but that can get a bit messy and you need to slackin the lock nuts before hand
 
nobber - yu mist the point, Mate.

tappets have been set correctly; but as the crank is turned, yu can hear this "click" from the engine. If yu put ya finger lightly on the spring retainer - yu can feel it too - almost like the valve is jumping slightly. It isnt on all valves, but on a significant number. I will have to confirm which valves it occurs on. I havent dismantled the rocker rail as yet, but I believe it is more likely to come from the cam follower mechanism as described above.
 
aint it a 2.3 motor?
if its got a dmtl weber thurs a fair chance he has a 2.3 90 engine in there , least mine did.
still the same cc as a series 2 1/4 but most refare to em as 2.3

twas the one i scratch me arse with n all.
have to rub me hole up against a lamp post now if i get an itch,
 
Anyone got a deepender 2.5 timing chain cover lyin around unloved - coz the b'steward wot last took mine orf broke the fookin thing?:eek::eek:

just let me know the price.
