Water injection has been used for a very long time. Was certainly used in fighter aircraft to improve high altitude performance. It is or was also used in jet engines to produce more thrust for take off.

Yep, cools the charge so denser on input and therefore greater expansion when the bang goes. That was the plan anyway. Seen water / methanol mix used too. And methanol / water mix sprayed on the intercooler. All sorts to try and get some extra BHP. Take a trip up Santa Pod on a weekend and see what the drag guys play with. Very interesting. They'll try anything.

Yes. But their engines only have to last until they get to the end of the strip!
