Hi

I am currently in the process of doing the egr mod so i thought i would remove the inlet manifold and give it a soak with oven cleaner.

I have removed it and looking into the engine there is a good 3-4 mm lining of crud in all of the 8 ports?!

Surely cleaning the manifold will only do so much when the engine is full of it? How can i get the rest of it off without fudging the engine up?

A quick response would be greatly appreciated and in the mean time i will start cleaning the inlet manifold!

Thanks

I normally use a rag and petrol. Unless you remove the head its dangerous to be doing too much. People may have better ideas but I dont want bits sat waiting to be injested on startup..

Only clean the ones with the valves closed, and then roll the vehicle forward in gear to shut the valves and clean the remaining ports.

I have been told by a mechanic they will clean up in time as im not confident to start messing inside the engine. It will be running cleaner with the egr bypass fitted so fingers crossed

had the same with mine and used a dyson Hoover with a slim nozzle along with a brush soaked in diesel

put a small rag down first and then slowly used the brush whilst sucking up any loose material

As said make sure port you're doing has valve shut, and hack it all out with screwdriver/rag/brake cleaner/petrol/diesel and then get an airline/hoover down to the valve end and give it a good blow out, its only manky exhaust gunge, just make sure there's no bits of wire from wire brushes down there.

have seen people using a drill with a wire brush trying to clean out ports ,whilst the head is in situ , going from one port to the other without bothering to see if the valves were closed or not , to say the least they had some serious problems after

The oily soot will have little effect on the engine, if a bit drops inside a port. It'll just get burnt and exit via the exhaust. This is exactly what happens should some brake away whist driving.
It'll be fine to scrape out as much as you can. Just make sure that no foreign objects get into the ports.

suprising how much crap comes out , after I had emptied out the Hoover , was a bit worried at first but done a few like that

remember , by using a nylon boiler brush to be the most effective , was ideal as I could slowly spin the brush and a lot of the junk would stick Inbetween the bristles and pull a lot of it out into the Hoover

I left it alone and will hope that it clears itself. However when putting the inlet manifold back i dropped a threaded nut and god knows where it went!!
Its a really awkward size and nothing i tried was the same. Even searched under the bonnet of my work van!

please tell me it didn't go down one of the inlet manifolds

have u removed the engine sump plastic tray to see if it dropped on there , make sure 100 percent it didn't go into an Inlet port,

if ur not sure plse don't start the engine , making come out in a cold sweat just thinking of it :eek:

The manifold was in place. Im pretty sure it was stuck in the end of the socket as i got it out the set, clipped it on to use it and it went somewhere down the alternator side. I heard something drop but didnt realise it was that till i was 1 short at the end.

I will take the manifold off and shine a torch down each port to make 100% sure before i put it back together tomorrow

pphhheeewwww just the thought of it, as long as the manifold was in place and u heard it drop , not calling u daft or being rude it was just the thought of something dropping down the inlet port

normally drops on the plastic tray underneath the engine

did buy myself an extentable magnet , many a time have run it all round the engine and underneath and picked up loose nuts, washers etc

I dropped a pin that held an injector return hose in , could I find it could I hell.

It's easy to drop something and sods law, it always disappears, never to be seen again. I dropped a MAF screw down the back of the engine just last week. Could I find it, could I hell. I spent at least 30 minutes looking, with magnetic pick tools and lights on sticks and nothing. I gave up and will just buy another, one day.
The inlet manifold uses a strange size thread, but can't remember what it is of the top of my head.

they normally reappear many months later on ur driveway or u hear then dropping off as u go up the road , lol

To clean ports. Ensure valve is closed on port being cleaned. Scrape as much crap out as you can. Get hold of a spray gun or pipe cleaning brush and fold the bristle end over on itself to form a suitable port cleaning brush. Then use a little solvent on the brush and scrub the port. Put an airline nozzle in the port ever so often with a rag over port and blow out on to rag. Continue with this until port is clean. Will be messy at first then improve as port becomes clean.

The only place i could find a M7 nut was the land rover parts centre, other than online.

Anyway the car is back together and definitely feels more responsive after the new pipercross air filter, bmw crank case mod and egr blanking mod.

On the first start there was a cloud of black/grey/white smoke that smelt of oven cleaner that stopped after a few revs.
