I bought a engine hoist hoist to change the td5 engine on the discovery and was complaining to my son how bad the instructions where to put it together, he pointed out any one that can not put a engine hoist together should not be taking a engine out, may be there should be a test set to people asking question on here to see if they have the ability to act on the information. The internet is a great tool it has all the information you need, but not the experience to use it

wonder where i left that voodoo doll of @doriz ;););):p:p:p:D:D

i’ll teach him to try and delete all my useless posts , ( pheeew , good job i didn’t say that out loud )

no, i think ur spot on, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if more came back and advised what the solution was , then as new people search the answers would be there

well in theory and only works if they search, lol

often ask what happened before the internet

People had to use a bit of common sense, and not be so lazy.

Some of the questions they ask, I almost reply, "Should someone with so little mechanical knowledge, and an inability to use Google search, or buy a manual, really be running an old landrover? "

Agreed. I've said similarly a number of times when people ask silly stuff about suspension etc ... 'I put the bolt through but couldn't see the thread' ... If they can't work through a most basic engineering principle then what hope have they in doing the driving ?

easy answer , it will only be short one end , or maybe theyve rubbed the tread off ;):D

I guess everyone has to start somewhere, but I think it is the incredible laziness that gets me. Anyone who can afford a landrover can afford a Haynes manual, they could probably even get one from the library.
And it would tell them what sort of oil they need, and how much, and how to carry out basic servicing, and a hundred other things.
And the little owner books that a lot of landrovers have with them tell you basic information, and even have some simple off road driving hints.

But they just sit there, brain in neutral, and type out their elementary question as if they are the first person in the world to change the oil in a landrover,

It does make me wonder sometimes what state some of the repairs are like???

Cheers

It's why, when reading the responses to some of our questions, I often just leave a thread alone .. I shudder to think.

Like "OK, what happened when you revved at standstill?" .. "I painted the bumper and checked the air filter" .... Doh, feckorf!

That is another problem. Some of them, you are trying to talk them through a procedure, and you can tell from their replies that they don't have enough skill to do what you are saying, and even if they do, probably only have a cheap Chinese adjustable to try and do it with.

You wonder sometimes if you are actually leading them into danger, like the vehicle falling off a jack onto them,

sometimes it worries me when brake questions come up and following questions are how to get the wheel off

Think our first response to a tech question ought to be ..

"Right, before work starts, you'll need a tripod and a decent, HD preferably, video camera. A Phone cam will do though" ... Leave instructions on how to post videos with the missus ... ;)

Not sure if I could stand watching a vid of them mutilating their landrover. Let alone what they get up to with their missus!
