Classic steering problems

Hello All

My 92' Range Rover is having trouble turning on full lock.
When I turn full lock to the right, it feels as though the car wants to go straight on forward, but on full lock left, there is just a slight clunking sound.
Anyone able to shed any light on this?

I had a similar problem with my 93RRC, there would be clonking when on full lock and would be a right pig to get into car parking spaces (and out of sainsburys !)

Thought it might be CV joint so changed the drivers side as that appeared to be where the noise was coming from. But made no difference.

Then thought it could be the dreaded viscous coupling being seized so it would be in permanent difflock.

Heres how to test for a seized coupling, jack up one front wheel only. Then put the trye lever on on of the wheel nuts and apply a constant force. The wheel should turn slowly (ive read about quarter of a turn in one minute). Mine would turn until the backlash was taken out of the transmission and turn no further (the wheel would also scrub when jacked up due to the transmission wind up).

So I removed the front propshaft, and blimey I could turn the beast in very tight circles compared to before.

Still awaiting a trip to the garage to get a refurbed viscous coupling and who knows what else has been damaged in the transmission. So still in rear wheel drive at the moment.

Its fairly common for the viscous unit in the tranfer box to seize so I suspect that your problem, if so get your front prop removed pronto.
