Does anyone know, or would like to take an educated guess, why the front spoiler of the Classic came to be modified with slots in the bottom lip ? I'm asking because I want to resume my quest for the correct spoiler for my '87 Vouge which had a plain lower lip. The original was still on the RR when purchased but having removed the bull-bar (yuck) fitted by the PO it was necessary to replace the cut spoiler & to the best of my knowledge the latest 6 slot spec. is the only aftermarket item now available, so that's what I had to fit at the time. I've read various RR related literature but never found a reason for the mod. which began with 4 slots in Oct '88 & 6 slots in Oct '89. Was it purely styling or a technical mod. I wonder ?
 
Not sure on the answer to that but I have a front spoiler from a Nov '87 Vogue, if you're interested?

Well I never ! After all my searching in the past ... a brownie point to LZ ;) I'm certainly interested, always assuming it's in good condition with no cuts-outs or damage. Are you looking to sell or swap for the later version that I have fitted ? We are 200 odd miles apart so any deal will require a carrier.

Hi, I removed it from a classic I broke about 6-7 years ago. Has been gathering dust in my garage ever since! I have a '92 but don't have a spoiler fitted as I use it off road and it wouldn't last long! Just purchased a 1984 Vogue to restore, if I'm correct this is before the front spoiler was introduced?
Just retrieved it from the garage, was actually surprised when I looked at it as it's in excellent condition, no damage at all, well apart from a tiny crack around one of the bolt holes where it attaches to the car. Not bad for 30 years old.

You are right about the '84, the spoiler was introduced in 'Oct '85

I first saw the slotted spoilers when the 1990MY was introduced, and as I'm sure u know that was when the fuel filler position was moved along with the exposed door hinges removed and of course a 3.9 engine with cats was fitted.
My dealer at the time was trying to sell me one and trade-in my two year old 3.5 so they let me have a demo 3.9 for a week, I was tempted but kept my 3.5 for a further eight years.

My parts book states the the slotted front spoiler change was was for models from VIN GA and it had 8 slots in four blocks of two. Part no.was back then MXC 6828.

From what I was told years ago, there was a point in the 80s when models without air-con had no slots and the models with air-con had them. Not sure how accurate that was. My '88 Vogue has 4 slots and air-con.
 
Reading this with interest. I have an 88 VM, do you know if they were fitted with the spoiler or not, and it does have air con.

You might be onto something here, my (pre-slot) '87 does not have AC. I can't see what practical difference venting the spoiler would make, but it's interesting that the number of vents was increased in '89 so perhaps it wasn't just a fashion statement. Sadly CSK is no longer with us so I can't ask him but if anyone bumps into any of the 'old boys' from LR perhaps they could ask, I do like to get to the bottom of things once my interest has been aroused.

I don't have any personal knowledge of the diesel versions but I've looked at my original LR sales brochure dated Nov '86 in which it illustrates three versions of the RR. They are 4 door, 4 door turbo D & Vouge. The last is the only one to have a spoiler, hope that helps you.

yes it does somewhat, I had assumed there was no spoiler fitted due to lack of existing holes around that area. It does seem to be a bit of a grey area though. At the end of it all what I want is a reliable simple motor that will last me, I know this will cause purists to spit and hiss but I am really not that interested in renovation to an original condition. If it was that important a lot of us would still be on cross-plies.

Each to his own of course. Unlike you I don't drive my RRC on a daily basis so I can take advantage of it's market appreciation by keeping it original. I'm surprised at the lack of attachment points (or holes as you say) as I would have thought that the body shells would have come from the same pressings.
 
Update : There appear to be various sources of info. regarding these 'slots, some indicate they are were connected with the provision of A/C, others engine cooling requirements - either way thanks to the helpfulness of a LZ member I now have the correct spec. spoiler for my 'Classic.

Little slots in the spoiler for cooling, I very much doubt it considering the vast expanse of air beneath the barge, it surely was a ninety's styling exercise, to attract city cants wif loadsa money!;)
No accunting for taste....cough:eek:

Given the shape of the car I would imagine the air underneath will pretty much zip straight through. Slots might allow some to divert where required or cause turbulence that pushes air where required.

Apologies to purists for the lol on the Louvres, I was affixed on a memory of a 70's Avenger with more front than Julian Clary (Tarmac scraping home brew GRP spoiler) whilst shod with formula 1 sized rear rims which were just fookin awesome....
It gave me a boner at the time, which I can laugh at now of course. It wasn't until the 80's before I understood faux pas or Freudian slips... Oops, running away now....again!!!
