Classic Range Rover Vs Classic Discovery?

I'm thinking if selling my Freelander for either a Discovery or Range Rover as my everyday car but I have a few questions:

Which is smaller and handles road driving better since that's where 80% of the time it will be?

Both being diesel 2.5 you can run them on 50% Veg oil?

With a budget of £1500 which would be in better condition?

if you're thinking about a P38 for £1500 buy the discovery, if its a 200/300 RRC then buy either. They're both as rotten now

So both the disco and the RR are the same size?
I always thought the RR looked bigger but that's probably just the boxy shape.

I didn't realise the RR rotted as bad as the early Discovery's.

Discovery has larger rear end as it goes up higher towards the back, seven seats remember!

I think I read somewhere that pre-discovery Range Rover Classics don't rust as much as post discovery Range Rover Classics & Discoverys themselves. So perhaps a pre 89 RRC? But remember theyre not without their faults!

I'm biased so I will say get a Range Rover Classic, there are plenty of Discoverys about... We're getting too few and far between imo!

As you want a diesel, then either go for a late 300tdi (1994 on wards?), or a slightly earlier 200tdi or then even the earlier 2.4 or 2.5 VM diesels. At the end of the day the VM diesels aren't bad engines despite what some people say!

So... go for a Range Rover Classic. You know its the most logical choice!

exactly the same chassis unless you get stretched chassis lse rrc , you can just unbolt bodies and swap them over

RRC is smaller (lower roof), and feels it to drive too.

Rust can't really be predicted as the one you look at might've been repaired etc so best not to generalise just look carefully at every car you consider.

Disco feels more modern and has a more airy feel to the interior due to the raised back roof and can have 7 seats (only jump seats in D1 though) but the RRC is also a nice place to be.

Off road both can be made to do most of what a Defender can do but both have a substantial rear overhang.

Buy the RRC, it's iconic and a very beautiful car.

You'l be lucky to get a rrc for a grand and half,unless you want a project.

I thaught that the crossmembers for the A" frame are different? disco round and welded mounts RR square with bolt on mounts?

Pre 1994 every Range Rover rots away no matter what u do.. P38'S are a lot better in that respect, but those electronics are so fragile

Having had a disco td5 and now owning a p38 range rover v8 i gotta say the disco overall was a better car. Up to the point i rolled the disco anyway. Nether were the classic i know but just sticking my oar in.

I got my classic for £1000 3.9 v8 though

RRC fabric seats are possibly the most comfortable ive ever sat in.

Plus you can say you own a range rover dont you know !

Had a RRC , now got a Disco. The Disco feels very 'boxy', a bit top heavy even in off road situations. I always compare them to two sisters: the older one agile and athletic, the younger one a bit plump and stodgy. But then I've got a thing about sisters

This is clearly a personal choice. I have had both, and have settled on a Discovery because it has more room inside and is easier to load through the back back door rather than the RR tailgate. I think it drives as well as the RR as well. If you fit RR seats in the Discovery it will be as comfortable.
The Range Rover is more Iconic and there is more pride in driving one though whereas the Discovery is seen by the public as just an old vehicle. On the other hand I like having an example of the vehicle that saved Land Rover.
As regards rust, given their age now it is only to be expected, and no worse than any other mass market vehicle of that era. Further, because the body sits on a chassis they are easy to repair without too many alignment problems. The Freelander 1 is better as regards rust though.
