Classic looking off road tyres

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and although have had a few defenders previously ive just picked up my first Series III (awesome). The tyres look like road / very light all terain and are i dont think are going to cut in on a couple of upcoming trips to wales green laning.

So im after a full set of 5 off road tyres that i can use on road also that will retain the classic series look - the problem is that everything i can find looks way to modern and i think ruin the classic look.

I used to run a set of Colways on an old Disco They were quite narrow so would have a look of something classic-ish. You dont mention wether yours is the 88" or the 109" so sizing is tricky. I cant find the ones I had but these look close:-
80/20 Open tread pattern with go anywhere ability, Speed 100Q, Tread 14mm deep,similar to the BFG MT,

Just reading that page noticed this bit.

thats the problem with it when peeps hang around lurking for years then one day just sign up and commence posting not realising theyve had all this time learning about us under false pretences we know them and blatantly forget to introduce themselves ;);)

If you are looking at modern tyres, then the modern fitment is the 235/85s which is what they fit to the Defenders out of the factory. These look quite big on a series.

Worth looking at 205/80s, which is what I have just fitted to my series and they look alright, but still not tall enough compared to the 750s fitted orginally.
 
If you want a classic look go for Michelin XCL 7.50 x 16, still available at Vass in Ampthill. The XCL was tyre of choice for Camel Trophy and British Army.
 
Best to use 7.5 x R16 size for series, anything wider will stick out the arches slightly and steering gets heavier. Michelin XZL seem to be the favourite for off road grip and still good on road but fookin xpensive for a set
 
seeing as no-ones mentioned them, I've got Avon Rangemasters on mine and they work well for what I use it for, mostly on road but with off road trailer towing.

Oh, they also look quite classic-y.

I have a set of mud pluggas in 7.50/16 ( in the forsale section)

Had a look round some one was selling copies on eBay a few weeks ago
 
if you look in the classic car mags you sometimes see a firm advertising classic car tyres inc the old town and country land rover tyre, think they are called classic tyres or something like that, hope this helps :)
 
Firestone SAT's if you can get them 750 R16 is the ultimate old school tyres I use them now. Mud plugga's are copies and not quite as good but very similar tread pattern
